And thanks to a new sliding scale* introduced in the most recent collective bargaining agreement, the Nets will have to pay close to $60 million in luxury tax

For just the 11 players currently on the roster, the Nets will have to pay approximately $153.8 million for a team that might only be the fourth best in the Eastern Conference.

I think Danny fleeced them...

When they start shedding salary because it isn't working (ala the post-Isaiah Knicks), they are going to be flat horrible. Lottery-time...

I agree. While they look pretty good on paper, that team is old and slow. These guys can't play big minutes anymore. I see one or two of them getting hurt. This years NJ pick might not be a top pick but next year I'd bet on it being a lottery.

I think Danny maxed out what he could with PP and Garnett. There's a good chance there value would have only decreased this year.

I expect nothing less than an ECF appearance from the Nets this year.  They are legit title contenders.

If they can find a small forward who can guard LeBron - then they are contenders. Otherwise, they lose in the ECF. Tony Allen, Boris Diaw

Pretty sure they are getting some guy named Paul Pierce.

I'd feel pretty confident he's still able to adequately defend LeBron, especially now that he will be just a role player in the offense.

He's not crazy, he just spends his money.

It looks like that what Prokhorov's doing is trying the European soccer philosophy (the rich teams that is) of trying to buy his way into contention.  Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid etc being the best examples.  Only problem is that if you want to really succeed at doing this, you probably need Lebron.

I'm sorry but they are not a 4th best team. Thats ridiculous. Swapping GW for Pierce and reggie evans? For Kg in starting line up is a ridiculous swing in talent, wins, defense, scoring, smarts, clutchness, playmaking etc

Kg and Pierce are seriously vaulting the Nets into top 2-3 in the league.  Still find it bizarre that even C's fans STILL underestimate those 2

On paper, are this year's Nets any better going into the season than last year's Celtics? If they are, it isn't by much.

Add the potential for injuries to the mix...this is a recipe for a potential disaster.

Exactly.

Not sure how it's happening but people are sleeping on Brooklyn.

Remember how much trouble Boston gave the Heat? Now take out Rajon Rondo and add Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, and Brook Lopez.

As currently built, the Heat are going to have serious problems dealing with a front court of Kevin Garnett and Brook Lopez.

Kyle Lowry, Dwayne Wade, 13th pick in even numbered rounds, 18th pick in odd numbered rounds.

Brook Lopez is a pretty big difference.

Offensive option in the post, a second player that can create offense instead of the PG (Deron/Rondo respectively)

For all the issues his defense/rebounding (despite this he was still the best defensive option the Nets had last year too) create for the team his offensive talent opens up a ton of things on the other end.

Unlike the Boston Celtics, "these guys" can comfortably be the 4th and 5th option in the Nets' starting lineup.

Unless, of course, you were calling Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, or Brook Lopez old. This team is ridiculously loaded, and is likely an automatic 1A in the East.

KG and Brook Lopez will be outstanding together I think.  When KG plays with a big that can score in the post, it's worked out very well.  You're talking about a starting five where every player is at least a good midrange shooter.

I really like the Nets starters.  The issue is the bench.  And long term, their prospects aren't good.

LOL funny to see posts like this when you know [dang] well if we had KG/Pierce along with D Will, Lopez etc everybody here would be saying were contenders but since its not us oh they got no shot they're old. Rofl

It just occurred to me that there are probably hundreds of posts on the BKN forums right now starting out with the phrase "If we stay healthy..."

I won't miss that.
