No offense - but Howard Smith Rondo is a ridiculously bad idea. Who hits free throws of that core? None of these guys are crunch time guys. Pick one of the three.

Free throw shooting matters that much.

just ask the Spurs how that felt...and Howard, Rondo and Smith's free throws < Ginobli and Leonard's free throws..

meaning tons of heart attacks come to a game down to the line

Ill take being in the finals at the free throw line to win the championship with dwight Howard on the line any day over , having a. Starting 5 of
Bradley
Brooks
Green
Humphries
Olynyk.
And begging that we are worst than the bobcats and magic.
And then if we are the worst team, pray our ping pong isnt picked 5th lol.

Why is the prospect of landing a really good part this year and maybe another next and maybe another the year after through sign and trades or regular trades and sending out 1st round picks in return for them so distasteful for people?

Is it so bad if we land Smith this off season and then maybe trade for LaMarcus Aldridge the off season after or during next season? Or getting DeMarcus Cousins in a sign and trade in the 2014 off season instead of LMA?

Is it so bad to think that trades and sign and trades will happen to make this team a contender again over a two year period of mediocrity rather than trying to do what Danny did in 2007 which was turn around a franchise in one month or tanking into oblivion hoping to land that less than 1-2% chance at a franchise player and waiting 4-6 years before he is ready to turn this team into a contender, that is, if he decides to re-up with the team after he is off his rookie contract?

I posted this in another thread a few days ago.  It's highly unlikely, but maybe if Howard tells LA "I'll leave for Houston and you'll get nothing", it might work (probably not).  It'd require re-working our deal with Brooklyn, however.

This trade would work under the CBA (provided the tax apron goes up a few million for 2013/14).

Boston
Howard-$20,153,178
Humphries-$12,000,000
Wallace-$10,105,855

Lakers
Bass-$6,450,000
Crawford-$2,162,419
Sullinger-$1.365,720
Teletovic-$3,229,050
Brooks-$1,210,080
Draft right's to Olynk
2014 1st-Bos
2014 1st-BKN
2016 1st-BKN
2018 1st-BKN

Brooklyn
Pierce-$15,333,334
Garnett-$12,433,735
Terry-$5,225,000

A subsequent deal could then be made with Atlanta in which Smith was acquired through a S&T for Humphries, Bradley & the better of our 2015 1st or the Clippers 2015 1st.

The problem with these trades is we lose our bench. We dont even have the slightest competitive bench now, and lets say the Howard/Humphries/Wallace/Rondo/SG lineup doesnt work. We just traded away our future for a team that cant play together. Rondo and Howard may work, but I personally wouldnt be willing to gamble our future away for a headcase and player like Dwight. Talented? Yes. A winner? No. He cares too much about how the media views him

Nick, didn't you know the only option is to trade off all your best assets for bad value and tank to the basement of the NBA?

I'm with you, I see no harm in adding Josh Smith.

I keep on reading this over and over again so I just wanted to post this..

Josh Smith never demanded a max contract

Quote
Josh Smith says he never asked for a max contract.
Smith spoke to the media following Thursday's practice and refuted earlier reports that he'll be seeking a five-year, $94 million deal this summer. "I never asked for the max. Those words never came out of my mouth," he said,

The only thing I don't like about Smith is his terrible shot selection.  The rest of his game is good.

Always been an avid fan of Josh Smith, and his shot selection wouldn't be as bad with Rondo feeding him easy passes/looks. No matter how you slice it, Teague isn't a pass first point guard, and is nowhere near the ability to pull off great passes like Rondo can.

Since we are talking Josh Smith, I wanted to make a point about his fit with the team he met with first last night.

I really don't see the fit in Detroit. Do they want him to play the three? To me having him consistently stand on the perimeter is a waste of his talent. Do they start him at the four and decide to bring Drummond off the bench? It doesn't make sense to me, unless they are considering trading either Drummond or Monroe for Rondo so that the Oak Hill boys can get back together...

Honestly I see the best fit for him being in Houston, but unless they are able to trade Asik and Lin without taking back salary, they won't have enough money to sign him.

I think with the types of players we have on our roster Smith would be a great fit for us at the four, but since we are probably tanking he almost certainly goes somewhere else.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Detroit seems to believe he can start at SF and then slide to the 4 for stretches as well. I'm guessing they also are thinking of breaking up Drummond/Monroe potentially if they acquire Smith.

Hopefully, we can convince Smith to come to Boston within the next few days, therefore giving us an opportunity to at least talk to Dwight.

Get Rondo and Smith in Howard's ear, and convince him to force the Lakers hand.  Boston could offer LA at minimium 4 1st round picks.

I'd salivate over Howard/Smith/Rondo core.

if possible I would do it, but Howard and Josh both tries to command max contracts. I don't think we have enough assets to net us both

I'll admit, it's mostly a pipe-dream of mine.  But I'd rather dream about that than the thought of tanking.

Anecdotally, there's probably a better chance of this happening than landing a "bonafide superstar" in 2014 draft (although according to pro-tankers, there are 15 franchise players in this draft). I'd prefer to put all my eggs in this basket, rather than sucking on purpose.

If the C's could get Drummond or Monroe for Rondo I think that would represent the best value possible for Rajon.

Agreed.

I think he's an awful fit for Detroit. Starting him at the 3 and encouraging him to stand on the perimeter seems like a recipe for disaster.

Unless like fafnir mentioned, they plan on breaking up the Monroe/Drummond front court which makes sense because Monroe will be getting paid next year and is a center being forced to play power forward.

On the possible Rondo front, I see no way they trade Drummond as people see Dwight Howard type potential with him but I could certainly see a Rondo for Monroe deal taking place. Makes a lot of sense for both sides.

The refs can only hurt you if you can't hit FTs. And let's be honest - there is a star system in the NBA. Game 6 this year? Stern wanted 7 games. It's about sales. If our guys can't hit FTs, we can't be contenders.

Also - how does that lineup deal with "pack the paint"? Stunningly limited offensive team. None of those three has a reliable (emphasis: reliable) jump shot. They're all flawed players.

See the issue with that is I don't think Detroit knows which of Monroe/Drummond they want to keep yet.

Drummond seems to have the most potential, but he just hurt his back and was a limited minutes garbage man and rebounding machine. Need more time to properly evaluate his development is my guess.
