Mavs would love having Rajon Rondo to chase Dwight Howard, but Boston needs Dallas to take multiple contracts off its books, sources say.

Ugh Woj has chimed in, maybe the talks are legit.

I hate hate hate to say this, but Ainge is on a mission. I could see him taking less value for Rondo in order to dump contracts.

I don't see dumping contracts as nearly enough of a priority to move Rondo for them.  The only really awful deal we have is Wallace's, and it's basically irrelevant this year (when the plan seems to be to suck), and expiring in 3, so there's only 1 year where it's truly problematic for us.

Everybody else are just guys who are modestly overpaid for what they contribute.  If we're not trying to be good this year, then cap space doesn't really matter til the 2014 offseason at the very earliest, when all those same deals will be easier to get rid of.

Mavs undeniably fans of Rondo, as @fishsports reported, but "trade talks" to this point have gone nowhere because Celts want only one Mav

ESPNSteinLine
Mavs: We're interested in Rondo. Celts: We want Dirk. So: More teams gotta jump in or Boston gotta budge for meaningful talks to take place

ESPNSteinLine
Even after ACL tear, Boston asking a lot for Rondo. Yet as we discussed Friday AM on @MikeAndMike, teams out there DO think Rondo next to go

not sure if this was posted yet, but why would the c's want dirk?

I feel like asking the Mavs for Dirk is like saying "We don't want anybody on your roster."

I agree but those modestly good players on modest contracts are enough to send this team from the 1-5 positions in the draft upto the 9-14 positions in the draft, severely curtailing the chances of getting a franchise guy next draft.

Perhaps Danny feels its more important to rid the team of good role players and their star to go full on tank than he is worried about dumping the salary.

Just a thought

Exactly right. Why on Earth would we want Dirk? Especially if we have no Rondo?

This thought is exactly why Boston should be retooling rather than completely nuking the team for a rebuild. When other teams rebuild, they don't have this issue. They don't need to make a bajillion moves before they can finally hit the reset button.

I think people are way too gullible. This was in jest. It was Ainge telling the Mavs, that if you offer Dirk we might be interested. The rest of your squad is not worth bringing into the conversation for Rondo.

DONE!

Yeah, this roster as currently constructed sits right in mediocrity.

Danny either needs to choose to use his new assets to make trades and add established players, or trade off all unfavorable contracts. Rondo is a favorable contract, but like Nick said, if you're not building around him this year he keeps you just good enough to stay out of the top 5 of the draft and he likely needs to be moved.

Not sure I agree with all this thinking but I'm guessing that's what Danny is thinking.

He's in a tough spot for sure.

If that were true, at least Danny isn't giving Rondo away.  I have a feeling Danny would flip Dirk if he did get him, which he won't.  A lot of teams would want Dirk to be the last piece of their championship puzzle run.

Exactly in spades. If we were to get Dirk and HIS 22 MILLION dollar EXPIRING contract, it would be flipped for assets and cap relief to a contender, like Miami after Wade is done & Lebron leaves. Even though DIRK would never go to the Heat.

If we can get Dirk (unlikely I know), why on earth should we trade him?

I think we'd be an even better team by sending out Rondo and getting Dirk back in return and then just picking up a decent PG in the free agent market.

Being bad in 2013/14 doesn't have to be the only option.

I dont see Mavs trading Dirk unless there was a 3 way with getting Josh Smith to the Mavs. Correct me if I am wrong, but Dirk wants Howard to play with, as does Cuban

Larkin, Ledo, Morrow, Marion, Crowder, 2014 2nd, 2 future firsts (16, 18 assuming the pick owed to OKC goes next year)

for

Rondo, Bass, Lee

Not a great trade for Boston, but not horrible either.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

This is just my wild bored idea..

Boston Sends: Rajon Rondo/Gerald Wallace/Courtney Lee ($27mill)

Dallas Sends: Shane Larkin/Shawn Marion/Vince Carter/2014 1st/2016 1st ($13.5mill)

I have no idea if Danny, Marc, or even myself would do this but Boston saves a boatload of money and bottoms out. Eats up pretty much all of Dallas's cap so they probably say no though.

I think trading Humphries instead of Wallace might be a more palatable deal with Dallas. The rest of that deal looks pretty good.

As also mentioned on this thread, it's pretty interesting that they wound up staying in the draft, and drafting two guys we were high on going in.

Also to piggyback off my last post...

Something people in Boston aren't talking about is what if Rondo takes a look at the Celtics post-Doc/Garnett/Pierce and says "hell no, I'm all set."?

Entirely possible and puts the pressure on Danny to find an acceptable deal.
