Rumor: Dallas Mavericks engaging in trade talks for Rajon Rondo

I'd want OJ Mayo and a few 1strounders. Along with them taking Wallace's contract if we could.

Also, Danny was rumored to be a big fan of Shane Larkin, who the Mavs suprisingly drafted after people saying for weeks they wanted out of this draft...

Maybe I'm speculating, but this may have legs.

They also traded for Ricky Ledo, using BKN's '14 2nd rounder that we gave them as part of the deal to move up for Olynyk

Larkin and Ledo were my two biggest wants :/
If Ainge was high on Larkin, why didn't we draft him?

Because when you're picking between two talented players who project as nothing more than role players / solid backups in this league, you go with the seven footer who can shoot threes over the point guard who can run pick and roll.

Honestly, for all the talk of Terry/Bass/Lee being bad contracts entering this offseason, I don't understand it. Bass, yes. Terry? For $5M a year, there's certainly a market for him when contending teams come looking for that veteran scoring off the bench. Lee? Doc absolutely ran his confidence into the ground. The kid is entering his prime and has a phenomenal skillset, and even in his down year last year, his defense was superb and his efficiency actually remained pretty respectable. He's making $5M a year himself, and there's no problem in regaining his trade value when the new coach doesn't have him on a centimeter-long leash.

Who says no? Can Dallas sign Howard AND Josh Smith or would they have to send more salary outwards? I'd take an extra contract if they made the 2018 pick unprotected. Thoughts?

Chris Broussard: I don't. Personally, I think the Rockets are his best option. But I'm told that he really likes the Mavericks. I think it's neck and neck between the Mavericks and the Rockets. What he likes about Dallas is that it would be his franchise. Even though Dirk is there and certainly a superstar, he's clearly toward the end of his career and wouldn't mind passing the reins to Dwight. And then, in 2014, they'll have cap room to really build around Dwight. He looks back at his time in Orlando when he led a team built around him that had really good players, but no perennial All-Stars, besides him, and he was able to lead them past LeBron James into the Finals. He thinks he can do that again in the right situation in Dallas. And Rick Carlisle, obviously one of the top coaches in the league. Through his history, you can see he would know how to utilize Dwight Howard to the fullest.


Then you've got Houston. Dwight likes the potential that they could have. He just wants to make sure that they would play in the style that would best suit him, not only defensively but offensively as well. In playing with a superstar perimeter guy, he'd prefer that guy be a point guard who's going to be passing the ball rather than a shooting guard.


He's fickle. That's why you can't write off the Lakers just because you don't know what Dwight's liable to do. As far as the Mavericks, I think he just sees Mark Cuban is one of the better owners in the league. They're clearly a team that will go to any length to build a championship team. And Dallas is smaller than LA in terms of the media coverage but still a big city. He likes Dirk. Dirk can still play and produce.

This would make sense, if Dallas thought it would bring them Dwight. I wonder if Houston will go after Rondo after hearing this news.

Yeah me too.  I can only think they're looking at BBIQ and personality as part of this rebuild.  Bradley, Green, Sully, Olynyck.  IQ, good personaility, team play.....

The thing is, Ledo is said to have a good BBIQ.  Now I'm getting upset again....

Same here, I really thought he was worth buying a 2nd for. He's got the talent, take the low risk chance that he can earn his place in the league.

I know this is 99% likely to all be coincidence, but it's amusing that they drafted two guys that Danny was known to like and now this Rondo story comes out.

The thing about PG vs scoring wing is that Harden is nothing like Kobe.

Harden plays a lot like a scoring point guard.  He gets plenty of assists and runs the pick and roll well.  He and Dwight would be a lethal combo.  Lin plays a similar style. 

Dwight would actually have two above average ball-handlers / passers to feed him, and both of those guys are talented enough offensively to keep defensive pressure off him.

You may be right, but that's just a really good reason to wait until he's rehabbed his knee and his trade value.

You never sell low in this league, especially when you're rebuilding.

This is exactly why I think we shouldn't be trading Rondo right now. His ACL injury is bringing down what's otherwise arguably one of the best trade values in the league.

Yeah me too.  I can only think they're looking at BBIQ and personality as part of this rebuild.  Bradley, Green, Sully, Olynyck.  IQ, good personaility, team play.....

Doing it that way is really smart, as long as you don't pass up on guys who are drastically more talented.

Best way to avoid a negative spiral when you're rebuilding is to avoid players like Beasley, Shabazz etc at all costs.  You only go for the selfish headcases if they are so talented you can't pass them up (e.g. Cousins).
