  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.
As in trade KG and Pierce?

...Yeah, I think so. In the 60s, it was very clear that Russell was their centerpiece and nobody else was safe from being traded. He would've done anything to make his team better (not necessarily getting the best players possible, though).

KG and Pierce are old and aren't centerpieces anymore. He'd move on.

Red also knew the importance of draft picks. He traded Gerald Henderson for a future first that transformed into a #2 overall pick.
I like Marcus Smart

No - Red was always very loyal to the guys whose numbers would end up in the rafters - didn't you'll hear Larry Bird talk about how important loyalty was to Red - how Red didn't trade McHale because Kevin knowingly damaged his own career playing his guts out on a broken foot in the '87 Finals, trying to get the Celtics another banner.

Red was a Man.

Danny is a pimp.
The Four Celtic Generals:
Russell - Cowens - Bird - Garnett

The Four Celtic Lieutenants:
Cousy - Havlicek - McHale - Pierce

Danny is a great gm who is always looking to improve without letting feelings get in the way.

but lets keep bashing him because pp and kg were going to lead us to the next title!

Nope, because unlike Danny Ainge, who's a very good GM, Red would rather try to compete to win no matter what his team is or what the future has in store instead of taking the cowardly way of tanking.

Add to the fact that he's loyal and he gives the players who brought glory and pride to this team their proper exits, he will never trade Paul and KG, don't matter if he won't have a top 3 pick in a loaded draft. Because, as tenn_smoothie said, Red is a MAN!

I bet he will not shy away from the challenge of rebuilding from scratch. Because he believes and he's confident in his GM'ing and drafting skills. I bet he will never let his team suck on purpose just for the sake of having CHANCE of landing a superstar in the years to come.

Lol, TP. Seriously people... if it was even just two years ago I wouldn't like this move. But if Doc, of all people, sees the writing on the wall, we should open our eyes too. KG at an old 37 -- considering all the minutes he's logged since high school -- and Pierce at 35 were not leading the Cs to a title. With Rondo and Sully unhealthy, Bradley still trying to figure out his game, no cap space and a mid first round pick in a weak draft, these Celtics had to be shaken. Rondo may be next and I still support that. No use trying for an eighth seed these next few years if you've already gutted the heart of the team.

Great trade, better guys (Pierce and KG). Think of it that way.

Draft: 8 first rounders in next 5 years.

Cap space: $24 mil.

No.  Red didn't trade his stars.  He was more likely to try a trade to put help around his existing team than to blow it up.

Yes.  Max, Parish and Ainge all finished their careers elsewhere.

Not sure, but I bet he offers Rondo when Noel started slipping.

Max was traded because I believe Red felt he did not work hard enough to come back from his knee injury.

Didn't Parish leave on his own accord?

Putting Ainge in the category of Pierce and KG is laughable. He was a little bit better than average.

As to the question, Red would never have traded guys like Pierce and KG back then, but he probably would today given how much the league has changed in terms of the CBA, etc. I am not sure a guy like Red would be as great a wheeler dealer in today's game.

He does the trade and would have done the Perkins trade too

There it is... It's hilarious that people are comparing the dealing of Pierce/Garnett to Max/ Ainge/ Henderson. Pierce and Garnett are the Bird/McHale of our generation. He NEVER would have dealt them. Maaaaaaaybe KG... Definitely not Pierce. As much Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. as that guy went through over the years? Finally reaching the mountain top, and exclaiming, for all to hear, that he wanted to retire a Celtic? No way in HELL ANY GM that believes in Celtic Pride and the tradition of this great franchise deals him. Least of all, Red.

Having said all that... Much like the way it's almost impossible to compare players from one era to another... It's almost certain that Red wouldn't be able to function in today's NBA. as a GM or a coach. It's a different thing now. Imagine someone pulling the tank-to-get-traded routine on his watch... Just picture that Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.... He'd pay some Southie thugs to bury that player alive. :P

Can you think of one example of Red trading aging stars for draft picks?

Red traded guys, but he was absolutely loyal to the star players on his team.  When presented with even better value for an aging Larry Bird and Kevin McHale, Red turned down the offers.

So, what are you basing your statement on?
