...Yeah, I think so. In the 60s, it was very clear that Russell was their centerpiece and nobody else was safe from being traded. He would've done anything to make his team better (not necessarily getting the best players possible, though).

KG and Pierce are old and aren't centerpieces anymore. He'd move on.

Red also knew the importance of draft picks. He traded Gerald Henderson for a future first that transformed into a #2 overall pick.

Nope, because unlike Danny Ainge, who's a very good GM, Red would rather try to compete to win no matter what his team is or what the future has in store instead of taking the cowardly way of tanking.

Add to the fact that he's loyal and he gives the players who brought glory and pride to this team their proper exits, he will never trade Paul and KG, don't matter if he won't have a top 3 pick in a loaded draft. Because, as tenn_smoothie said, Red is a MAN!

I bet he will not shy away from the challenge of rebuilding from scratch. Because he believes and he's confident in his GM'ing and drafting skills. I bet he will never let his team suck on purpose just for the sake of having CHANCE of landing a superstar in the years to come.

Lol, TP. Seriously people... if it was even just two years ago I wouldn't like this move. But if Doc, of all people, sees the writing on the wall, we should open our eyes too. KG at an old 37 -- considering all the minutes he's logged since high school -- and Pierce at 35 were not leading the Cs to a title. With Rondo and Sully unhealthy, Bradley still trying to figure out his game, no cap space and a mid first round pick in a weak draft, these Celtics had to be shaken. Rondo may be next and I still support that. No use trying for an eighth seed these next few years if you've already gutted the heart of the team.

There it is... It's hilarious that people are comparing the dealing of Pierce/Garnett to Max/ Ainge/ Henderson. Pierce and Garnett are the Bird/McHale of our generation. He NEVER would have dealt them. Maaaaaaaybe KG... Definitely not Pierce. Having said all that... Much like the way it's almost impossible to compare players from one era to another... It's almost certain that Red wouldn't be able to function in today's NBA. as a GM or a coach. It's a different thing now. Imagine someone pulling the tank-to-get-traded routine on his watch... Can you think of one example of Red trading aging stars for draft picks?

Red traded guys, but he was absolutely loyal to the star players on his team.  When presented with even better value for an aging Larry Bird and Kevin McHale, Red turned down the offers.

Yea,think I remember that Red turn down a trade with Dallas...McHale for Same Perkins and Detlef Schrempf...and Indiana with Bird to the Pacers for Chuck Person and parts..correct me if Im wrong
