Poll

As a Celtics fan, are you happy with what Danny Ainge has done this past week? (Doc, Draft night, KG+Pierce trade)

Yes, I'm happy -we got assets for Doc, KG and Pierce while we had the chance. I'm very happy overall. 2014 draft should be our #1 priority.

No, I'm upset- we could have gotten more/better if we waited till the deadline. Or I''d rather let KG and Pierce retire Celtics and give them another run- even without Doc
9 (28.1%)
I'm happy with the KG/Pierce trades and all the picks but not our draft night (Olnyk, Iverson)
2 (6.3%)
I'm still processing things. My heart says no but my head says yes (or vice versa). Also too early to tell with Olnyk

Poll options are a little mixed/vague but I thought those were the major feelings we'd all be having.
Personally I'm ecstatic.
I'll gloat in saying I've been one of the few on this board who were seriously desperate for Danny to go down this asset acquisition/tank/rebuild mode.

To me the timing is just too perfect for us not to roll the dice on the 2014 and 2015 drafts. We got some really nice picks and assets for a 36 and 37 year old.

I love KG and Pierce but now that Doc's gone I don't think it's wrong to send them to LAC or Brooklyn- particularly if going to those teams gives them a shot at a deep playoff run again. I mean Indiana's size gave Miami fits. A starting 5 of
Deron Williams
Joe Johnson
Pierce
KG
Lopez
Is a legit team now- very long in the tooth- but legit.
I'd rather they play there and have fun/compete instead of rotting away here as the 7th seed or while we tank.

But for us, we need to take back contracts like Wallace adn Bogans to get these picks. We also need to fill a certain percentage of the salary cap while we tank.
It's the cost of rebuilding. On the bright side even a bum like Humphries will bring us back a late first rounder or an expiring deal in one year.

Sit back and remember that Ainge has done all of this is in a 5 day span and he's done it without giving up Bradley, Sully, Green. Heck he's even held on to Melo so we'll at least get to see him on an NBA court.

The next big question...I don't know what happens to Rondo now.
Seems to me Danny is immediately going after size.
We'll have Olnyk, Iverson, Melo.
He's also gone after Lamont Jones and Pressey.
I'm looking at Olnyk/Sully and Rondo/Lamont/Pressey and
I'm seeing loads of pick and roll with athletic bigs ala a poor Memphis Grizzlies prototype. Two bigs that can shoot/rebound surrounded by crafty PG's that use speed and agility to distribute (cheap versions of Damian Lillard). Lamont is a cold blooded 3 point shooter and Pressey was basically the assists king of one of the best offenses in the NBA. Perhaps they're hoping to find a poor man's Mike Conley/Lillard type PG here?

We've seen the size of teams like Memphis and Indiana give Miami and OKC huge fits and perhaps Danny's decided to start going down this road.
Again, I don't know what this means for Rondo.
Do we bring him back quickly to showcase his health and improved stats? (his scoring and stock will rise undoubtedly).

Or do we slowly work him back in while we suck and hopefully get one All Star level prospect out of all our trading/assets and another star from tanking?
Something like Rondo for Cousins looks more realistic to me now.

What are your thoughts? Do you think Danny has a specific plan of attack moving forward? I think we might slowly see a shift back to the 'size matters' days of pre Miami Heat/OKC dominance. It's also very possible he's just collecting eggs for the basket and will do so in preparation for the 2014 draft.

All I know is that I'm very happy we've finally pulled the trigger and that Danny had the heart and balls to do it.
This is how he got us KG and Ray 6 years ago.
Hopefully it gets us Wiggins or Jabari Parker. If the draft fails then we'll hopefully have enough assets for a sign and trade of Kevin Love or Marc Gasol in the summer of 2015...

All I can say is Rondo being traded for a big man or being traded for another 2014 top 5/10 pick looks very possible to me.Probably means it will be by February as well.

Which lottery bound teams will need a good point guard?
Orlando (still no Bledsoe)
Charlotte (Kemba Walker. Lawl)
Philly (Drue Holiday is gone, Noel+ Mcelmore will need a floor general/leader)
Sacramento (Isiah Thomas or Jimmer lawl)

In Ainge we trust.

I don't think happy is the right word, but I understand the move and think the package of picks was pretty good (when combined with our own picks which should also be good now).

I thought Pierce and Garnett would have more trade value, but seeing what the Clippers were offering makes me think that the deal with Brooklyn is about right.

Surprised actually that Doc was deemed worth a first round pick though. That was a really good deal in my opinion.

I think you could say the picks are all decent assets couldn't you?
I mean if KG and Pierce are gone from that Nets in 2016/17/18 they will probably suck and those picks are potentially top 5-10. I'm 100% serious.
And what if KG or Pierce go down for the season?

I would have liked a different pick to Olnyk but I don't have a problem with Ainge getting him. I was surprised he had to move up to get him but it wasn't too expensive.
We need Wallace deal for a proper tank. Pretty much every tanking team has those albatross/terrible deals that keep salary spending close enough to the cap but ensure that we suck enough to not scrape out of the bottom 5 teams.

I think about our team this year and we are going to be okay defensively but just horrid offensively.
Shooting will just be puke worthy lol. Can't wait.

I think heart say no, head says yes pretty much covers it.

Definitely still processing things.  It's like I know my hearts been ripped out but I haven't looked down at the gaping hole in my chest yet.

it hurts to see Pierce go but i think i'm pretty happy with the haul we got. Potentially very useful picks. I see a lot of complaining about Wallace but i trust Ainge enough to know what to do with it a few years down the line (similar to Raef Lafrentz/Theo Ratliff contract). And while i was first pretty upset that we drafted Olynyk, i'm slowly making my peace with it. Big men who can score are easier to showcase than big men who can defend, particularly rookie big men. Besides, Rondo makes offensive players look better than they are, and he needs scorers on his team for him to be effective.

9 1st round picks in the next 5 drafts.  Can't complain about that.

The fact that the Celtics are guaranteed to be a sub-30 win team the year that the draft is supposedly going to be excellent is just icing on the cake.

Few teams are set up to rebuild like the Celtics are now.

At first with the rumors I was excited. Then the trade happened and was sick to my stomach. Mostly because right after they showed highlights of the 08 season. And we wont see them play in Green again.

But that went away. Thought about what this will mean in a couple years. And they are set up WAY better than most teams during a rebuild. Could have been the Cavs when Lebron left and was left with nothing. Yes they got lucky with Irving, but again LUCKY!

With this deal they have 9 chances to get lucky in the first round in the next 5 years.

Or they bundle a pick with a contract to sweeten a deal.

As much as I appreciate the ride the Big Three took us on since 2007-08 it was time to move on.   I was tired of watching them go through the motions and then attempt to turn the switch in the post season.  Ainge got more then I expected for three guys who probably wont be playing in 2 or 3 years time and are well past their prime years.

He also got a pick for a coach who didn't want to be here through a rebuild and was likely headed for the broadcast booth if Ainge didn't let him out of his contract.

I'm not overly concerned with who we drafted last night.  They're assets.

The bonus for me is he did right by PP and KG.  Now they can go to Brooklyn and fill rolls they are fully capable of at this stage of their careers rather then attempting to carry the Celtics which they can no longer do.  Now they can do what they do best which is compete on a team with a shot to contend.

It's bittersweet for sure but it needed to be done.

Exactly. It sucks to see them go. But they're going to a good situation.
We have loaded up for the future extremely quickly and the timing couldn't be better.
