This is an excellent trade for the Celtics. Not only does it make us bad enough right now to compete for a top pick in 2014, it stacks us with draft picks down the road.

Looking at Brooklyn's roster contracts, they will not be in good shape to sign free agents when Pierce and KG retire. Down the road they're looking at Lopez, Williams, Joe Johnson, MLE, and vet mins. In 2016 that team could be TERRIBLE.

Yeah the whole point of this trade is to clear cap room when Humphries expires and hope two of those draft picks go lotto.

But hey with Humphries and Evans coming back, at least we won't be the worst rebounding team in the league...hah

I agree happy about this trade both for the C's and Pierce/KG otherwise who else was going to take them? like I said before at least The Captain isn't going to the Cavs or Bobcats.

I have a big problem with Celtics fans which I often find myself being a component of, being a Celtics fan myself. Any trade in which we don't 100% fleece the other team is a bad one, and one that would justify the firing of whichever executive is responsible. The fact of the matter is that as I see it, this deal is a very good one for both sides. Yes, we take back Gerald Wallace, but it is the only way we can match salaries in this proposed trade. Also, it's probably the only way you can convince the Nets to make the deal. We won't be good for at least two to three years at least, so it's not as if we're on the brink of contention but bogged down by a poisonous contract.

I see a lot of people challenging the point in swapping the expiring contract of Pierce for the expiring contract of Humphries. For one, Humphries' contract is slightly easier to trade at the deadline if we want to. Also, Humphries is worse than Pierce. If our only goal this season is to shed salary and collect assets, wouldn't we want a player that will accelerate our rebuilding process (as worse teams have a better chance at getting a lottery pick) rather than one that has us dwelling in the middle of the pack for a few more years?

As for Tornike Shengelia, a lot of Celts fans are overlooking this guy. It's very telling that a lot of Nets fans are hesitant in becoming what is basically a bona fide contender just to keep him. Great offensive game, remarkable motor, good size, 21 years old? Sign me up. We're lucky to be getting a prospect like this.

Another concern Cs fans have is that ATL could possibly swap picks with the Nets in 2014, which appears to be the first pick the Cs would get in this deal. How much damage could that really do? I can't see the Hawks having a better record than the Nets next year, and if by chance they do, it won't be so much better that this deal wouldn't be worth the trouble. If, as some people say, the picks in fact start in 2015 per league rules, I still hold my position despite the Hawks ability to swap picks in that draft as well. If the picks start in 2016 for the same reasons, we don't have to worry about the Hawks.

Finally, with the inclusion of Jason Terry now looking more and more likely, the Celtics shed the contracts of older, better players that would weigh down their cap space and hold the Celtics' rebuilding process hostage.

Overall, this deal is a good one and the calls for Danny to be fired because of this rumor are absurd. Rebuilding is a necessary process at this point, warts and all. Celtics fans must shake their aspirations to rob teams blind like the Lakers have done recently and for once rebuild like a normal NBA franchise.

Wonderful post. It was articulate, nuanced, well reasoned, and TP worthy. Thank you for taking the time to craft it.

Throw my signature in there as well. This is what a rebuild is... time to get used to it.

This trade only makes sense if we swing Gerald Wallace to another team right away..

Nope.  You're looking to compete in 2016.  You'll use Gerald's contract as another asset when its an expiring contract.

You still have to use the assets correctly, but Ainge has done it before and I wouldn't put it past him to do it again.

We're setup perfectly for the rebuild.
TP True enough bro!
Im just sad and very confused right now, cant believe we are really heading towards a rebuilding process :-X

if josh reddick had value then wallace, kh and certainly evans can have value, these guys produced in this league, don't forget there going to be on a weak roster and plently of rebs are going to be available(because of the missed shots) and alot previous value was based on rebounding

  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.
This is a trade that could end up going horribly bad in the future for the Nets.

I can handle that. Losing KG/Pierce for nothing would probably equal 5-10 bad years.

I don't think you can stretch it to 4.  A lot of assets yet to be determined that can turn into gold.

I'd say 2 if you wanted a number at this point.

Player      2013/14  2014/15  2015/16

Humphries  $12M     $0         $0
Wallace      $10.11M  $10.11M  $10.11M
Evans      $1.70M   $1.77M   $0
Bogans      ?        ?        ?
Shengelia  $788K
Taylor     $788K
Total      $25.5M   $11.8M

Note: Not incl Bogans

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/boston.htm

Pierce     $15.33M
KG         $11.53M  $12M
Jet        $5.23M   $5.45M
Total      $32.10M  $17.45M

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/brooklyn.htm

Someone please check my math

2014 to 2015 / I don't see any great savings
2015 to 2016 / We're adding $10M from Wallace

It doesn't make much financial sense to me

Wallace is the best of a mediocre bunch

So, it comes down to (3) 1st round picks that will probably be late round picks every other year...and don't rant about 2014 being such a great draft...

It does not sound like much of a rebuild to me...
