cool, I just almost posted this in the proper forum, but I guess I'll talk about it here too

my question is who are we signing and trading?
can getting Josh Smith keep KG semi happy? Because that's not really 'tanking'...it's going young.

I'm saddened by the idea that we'll probably have to trade JG. Which I think is a solid mistake.

Atlanta wouldn't want Bass/Lee/etc would they? Of course, unless DA put that unprotected pick on them.
The theory is that you dump Pierce onto the Cavs for a trade exception and 2nd rounders... then send that trade exception + young assets for Josh Smith in a sign and trade.  Probably would have to give up something minimal like Avery Bradley to make it worth Atlanta's time.

Also included in that theory is that he's a free agent.  Atlanta would rather get something for him instead of nothing.
I think the Hawks, want to clear space to make an offer the Howard. They would want the TPE and no salary they couldn't waive (the 3 chinamen), then try to get rid of another small salary and go after Howard. DW at center allows them to move Horford to PF where he is a more natural fit, this would make them a pretty good team.

On the C's side, Rondo, ???, Green, Smith, KG where ??? could be Redick or Martin (might be able to get one of them: Martin for Bass or Redick for Lee) would also be a pretty good team. Personally, I just don't think it's a good enough team, but you never know.

If we do get Smith, one has to think Sully and even Avery would become expendable. I'd probably try to package them for an upgrade at the 2 (Eric Gordon? Maybe not at that salary).

If we draft Dieng, his mid range jumper would make him a good fit on a front line with Smith and Green.

As much as I like Sully and AB I kind of agree.  I worry that they would become trade fodder for a serious scoring 2 to space the floor.  We need 2 good 3 point shooters on the floor.  Right now with our roster, we rarely have that weapon.

JJ Redick or Korver for the MLE?

I think JJ is a good player.  If he can be 3rd or 4th banana without having pressure on him to do anything but hit 3's and play good D I would like it a lot.

I am not such a Korver fan...I think JJ would be a great Celtic fit.

Agreed,  I like JJ quite a lot. Don't know if he can be had for the MLE though.
He's a UFA, could get him with a S&T moving a guard to the Bucks (which they need, so Lee or Terry) and maybe a prospect (pick or Melo).  Danny might target JJ, but only if he's got the rest of the starters set up.

Rondo, JJ, Green, Smith, and KG would be a good starting unit. With Schroder, Bradley, Lee/Terry, Sully, Bass, Dieng/Withey and vet mins on the bench it would be a top 5 seed in the playoffs, I think. That might be it's top end, though, and that's a problem.

The Hawks whole pitch to D12 is Josh Smith (they're childhood friends) so if Smith bolts, its extremely unlikely D12 goes there.

I don't understand the fascination with Josh Smith.

DeAndre Jordan
Josh Smith
Jeff Green
Avery Bradley
Rajon Rondo

That team's spacing and FT% makes me cringe.

Do you really think Avery Bradley is a starting SG in this league?  I think that he is a plus backup/lockdown defender role player.  I think either Lee or Jet will start at SG or we trade one of them plus Bass for a shooter or draft pick.

Where are we getting Deandre Jordan from btw, I thought Stern nixed any Celtics to Clippers trade cos he was going into 'hardass' mode.

Couple of things that seem to be being throwing around here:

San Antonio does not have $18 million in cap space. They could create that much space but to do so would have to renounce just about everyone who is free like Manu, Blair, Neal, Mills and Tiago and would have to give up their draft pick in the first round.

When trading a player for a trade exception you are only allowed to have that player be $100,000 over the value of the exception. So if we are trading a $15.3 million exception(acquired from Cleveland in a trade for Pierce)to Atlanta for Josh Smith, Smith's first year of his contract can be no higher than $15.4 million, which means he's not getting a max contract.

Atlanta does not want any salary coming back as they are in the midst of a massive rebuild. They will want picks.

A Pierce for Diaw trade might be interesting - that would create a $10.6 mil exception.  Probably not enough to entice Smith, but maybe.
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

Lee and Jet were both on the team last year and Bradley started.

This doesn't make any sense. The C's needed a guy like Smith two years ago or last season. You would be essentially wasting a large trade exception on someone that's not going to get you over the hump. This is the type of move the Pistons made after their team broke up. Rebuild the right way and don't overpay for such players.

Josh Smith is not Charlie Villanueva. I like Smith on this team. He is an elite defender, and a plus on the offensive end as long as he stops chucking up fade away three's. If someone can get that part of the game out of him, he is a darn good piece to have on your team headed for a championship.

This type of move isn't about winning championships it's about selling tickets. Build a legit contender not some middle of the road playoff team like Smith's current team.

Smith's max contract is limited to $16.4 mil approx, he'd only be giving up 1 mil in the first year, maybe a total of 5mil overall.  If he wants to play here, I don't see that being enough of a difference to dissuade him.

Get Big Al in FA. For all his knocks, he's a center who can hit FT's
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

His game is to similar to sully's , better off getting a big that can defend and run with Rondo , Josh Smith would be better.

and to be fair...Lebron took a paycut to play in Miami if I'm not mistaken...even Bosh...

so as you said, I don't think a mil less for Josh is much of a difference

I think we need to capitalize on this.

For all his faults, J-Smoove is one of the few top-tier free agents who actually wants to come to Boston.

Yeah I honestly don't think building through the draft is going to work this time.  I think our best move is to try to get a solid team together with some real assets and then hope we can convince a 3rd star to join up with Rondo and Smith.  If we can do it and still keep some of Bradley/Sully/Green all the better.
