If the Celtics want to rebuild, do not be scared of being bad.  Do not overpay for fringe all-stars.

With Rondo/Green/Smith Core we may as well rename our team the fringe allstars.

Though it did work out pretty decent for Indy.  They gave miami a run for their money.
CB Draft LA Lakers: Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony,Jrue Holiday, Wes Matthews  6.11, 7.16, 8.14, 8.15, 9.16, 11.5, 11.16

What the hell are we doing? We're supposed to tank, not become the treadmill Atlanta Hawks.

Wouldn't you rather see the Celtics continue to compete rather than just suck? Remember, tanking to get into the lottery is a crap shoot and rarely ever works (especially for the Celtics.)

See 1997 and 2007.

I think another issue moving forward would be to have a 5 that can stretch the floor a bit.  With JG and JS as your 3/4 I think they would benefit a lot with a 5 that had some range.  It would open up the driving lanes for them and allow them to use their athleticism to get to the hole.

Just say no, Danny.

Nothing good will come from this.
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

If we do get Smith, one has to think Sully and even Avery would become expendable. I'd probably try to package them for an upgrade at the 2 (Eric Gordon? Maybe not at that salary).

If we draft Dieng, his mid range jumper would make him a good fit on a front line with Smith and Green.

As much as I like Sully and AB I kind of agree.  I worry that they would become trade fodder for a serious scoring 2 to space the floor.  We need 2 good 3 point shooters on the floor.  Right now with our roster, we rarely have that weapon.

JJ Redick or Korver for the MLE?

I think JJ is a good player.  If he can be 3rd or 4th banana without having pressure on him to do anything but hit 3's and play good D I would like it a lot.

I am not such a Korver fan...I think JJ would be a great Celtic fit.

I don't love the idea of Smith but to have a core of

Rondo
Bradley
Green
Smith
Sullinger
First round pick 2013
First round pick 2014

going forward, is a lot better than tanking for years hoping to get great players and then waiting 6 years for them to get good enough to win.

I don't know.  Having a second round playoff exit as the team's ceiling for the next half-decade doesn't entice me.

I agree.  I'd like to believe that Danny is smart enough to realize that flipping Pierce for Smith isn't enough to make us contenders.  And he has plan(s) to acquire an additional all-star caliber player (within the next year or so).  I'm skeptical that we have enough assets however.

Agreed,  I like JJ quite a lot. Don't know if he can be had for the MLE though.

Not a big fan of Smith. From watching him play he seems like the athletic star player, who is exciting to watch, but not good enough/doesn't mesh well enough with team basketball to get you past the 5th seed and a 1st/2nd round exit. If he is coming in at max money I'm going to be seriously upset.

Speaking of which thats the other major concern. The guy wants max money and hasn't ever made an all-star team?

Any idea of what salary figure he might be coming in at?

Maybe we get a discount for him playing next to his best friend Rondo? Wishful thinking.

My hope is that out of the two picks, Danny gets lucky and hits big on one and that Sully becomes a heck of a player. Then I think more than a 2nd round exit is possible.

While I think mediocrity is the worst place to be in the NBA, I think as the CBA gets older and salaries level off and teams can't put 3 All-Stars on a team anymore, that it will be easier to move up out of mediocrity with a group of fringe All-Star types, ala Detroit 2004.

But I do agree, such a team has the chance of being just a 1st or 2nd round exit team. But those teams will make money, which, I think, this ownership wants. A full tank job will lose money and I doubt that is something Wyc and the boys want for 4-6 years.

Consider the departure of Doc Rivers Phase II of the Celtics’ slow dismantling, which began last summer with Ray Allen leaving Boston. Phase III will come this week, when Boston must either trade Paul Pierce or decide to buy him out. They have until June 30 to inform Pierce of such a move.

As for the rebuilding sure to follow the dismantling, that is contingent on what happens with Pierce. If the Celtics can unload Pierce to a team with enough cap space to absorb his salary, they will get a trade exception worth Pierce’s salary, or $15.3 million. And if that happens, the plan is already in place. According to a source, the Celtics have a sign-and-trade offer ready for Atlanta forward Josh Smith that would be the top priority in free agency.

TP to kgainez for posting this in the other thread , but this deserves its own.

Not sure how I feel about this :-\

Those who are surprised please raise your hands? This has been one of the most obvious things in the NBA. Smith wants to play with his buddy Rondo. I'm not sure how I feel about small ball with KG at the 5 but Smith playing with Garnett might actually help Smith in the long run. I'm sure KG would put up with his crap...

i think you have to consider he was unhappy in ATL and his bestie is in Boston
we might be focusing too much on Josh Smith and not Josh Smith and Rondo and everyone else who will be playing...or maybe that's just me.

  • Eagerly Awaiting the Next Fantasy Draft
If we do this deal I wouldn't mind KG playing with us for half a season before we get something for him at the deadline. He would space the floor for us, and hopefully teach Smith some things about defensive rotations.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I think if you get J Smith, that it at least gives KG pause about coming back next year...I think KG is the perfect bait to open up the lane for JG and JS.

I actually like this lineup:

Rondo / T Will
JJ Redick / AB / Terry or Lee
J Green / Draft pick
J Smith / Bass / Shav
KG / Sully / Melo

I think it would gel better and be more balanced than last years squad.  More athletic, quicker, maybe better rebounding?  Not sure.

The big issue with all of this is getting the Cavs trade exception.  If PP doesn't want to play there, are they really going to pull the trigger?

I really hate the idea of stretch 5's. Give me a big, 7 foot, rebounding, down in the trenches, defensive big man any day over a stretch 5. I would rather rely on Sullinger extending his range and Green being proficient at threes to space the floor over a stretch 5 any day.
