When was the last time a team got hosed the way we did the last 2 years.

It's really kind of amusing. You haveRay Allen and Doc Rivers, two of the most respected NBA guys, 2 possible hall of famers. We paid them more money than other teams
We pretty much worshiped the ground that they walked on while they were here. We won a championship here etc etc.

All of a sudden (at least in my opinion) Ray Allen abruptly leaves to go to one of our most heated rivals who we lost a game 7 to a year before for half the money and almost half the playing time.

Then we have Doc Rivers a year later. Highest paid coach in the league under contract for 3 more years. Plenty of documentation/quotes/interviews expressing "loyalty" and showing loyalty and not just talking about. Stating that "some people" would shy away from a rebuild but not him. Of course Rivers going to the Heat or the Lakers would be worse but my gosh the Clippers who have a dcoumented scumbag joke of a franchise and Doc Rivers just chomping at the bit to work for them. Ridiculous

I know some people didn't care at all that Ray left or are pretty much giving Doc Rivers a standing O on his way to LA. For me I'm not even that upset with either situation. I just find it amusing at this point.

I know teams get screwed, the Cavs lost Lebron, Dwight bounced from Orlando but we just got pretty much suckered punched in the you know what 2 years in a row. To the most unlikely suspects.

I still don't view losing Ray as much of a loss. I think there would be a boatload of people complaining about his being on the roster for the next few years if he'd re-signed with the team.

Nothing lasts forever, look at the bright side our SG plays D now but can't shoot and no more small ball.

In fairness to Ray, how many times did Danny try to trade him? He was all but sent to the Grizzlies at one point and it got nixed at the very last minute. Loyalty is a two way street. So I wouldn't say we got hosed on that one as much as we brought it upon ourselves.

As for Doc, yeah it was a bit surprising given the all his talk that he never intended to stick it out as our coach, but again I don't think hosed is the right term, given that the FO knew full well he wasn't sticking around for the rebuild. The fans just weren't let in on that fact.

My point was more that we got flipped the bird by those 2.

I mean i guess they are semi unique scenarios but Ray won a championship with us, played 5 years with us, played more minutes than any of the Big 3, is from the New England area and we offered him twice as much money.

I mean, one would think that someone like that would stay with his current team. And this is coming from supposedly one of the classiest guys in the NBA

I'd say being lied to after you signed a multi year coaching deal is getting hosed.

We really don't know what the real deal was with him and Danny. But I guess I can at least say that either way us fans kinda got hosed if we ere just completely lied to from a combination of whoever.

Yeah the thread is more about the unusual circumstances and actions that were taking buy Doc and Ray the past 2 years.

They are extremely rare circumstances and for them to happen in back to back years just seems crazy.

I think PP played the most minutes.

Ray was a much better fit for the role the Heat offered him than for the role we'd've had him play, and he would've taken minutes away from our younger 2s.  Made perfect sense to me why he left.

Doc's a good coach, but if he doesn't want to rebuild, he doesn't want to rebuild, and we're better off not paying a coach $7 million a year to not contend.  Coaches' salaries don't count against the salary cap, but they do count against the bottom line, and this will free up some money to help with the rebuild, not to mention the extra 1st we got.

I'd say both of those moves were to our long-term benefit, and keeping either guy doesn't get us over the top in the short-term, so I'm ok with both.

I have to assume that Danny and the FO were all well aware of the situation (especially after that Herald article) so I think the blame goes to the whole organization, but I get what you are saying since the fans really were out of the loop on that one.

But again did we really get hosed? I thought Doc was going to walk away for the booth anyway and instead we end up with a first round pick out of it. I'm pretty happy with that result. If he had just walked over to the Clippers for nothing that'd be another story, but at least we got a nice little divorce settlement.

You have to wonder if some guys just get tired of Danny's act and that has played a role in Doc and Ray leaving.

Well, I am not sure if it's his "act", or if he was just doing his job...but I absolutely think Ray left because Danny kept trying to trade him (and rightfully so).

But I don't think Danny had anything to do with Doc leaving.  Doc left because it was a better opportunity to win, and coach a guy he has always wanted to coach, rather than staying around as the team rebuilds.

I also think Doc leaving was a mutual decision.  He is getting paid more money than the C's want to pay when they are rebuilding.

I just don't think the C's got hosed in either case here.  They lost Ray, because they decided it was time to move on from him, and then when they changed their mind, he was ready to think about himself (as he should).  And with Doc, it was just time.

Who knows, maybe there will be some more "hosing" to occur (e.g.: KG demands a trade, PP the same, etc).
Celtics fan for life.

  • It's all about the TEAM!
I feel burned by both just about equally.

If you go back 2 years ago, Ray Allen is getting to the twilight of his career but his work ethic and legacy of shooting 3's make him seem like he's a big part of our team. After the loss in 2010 and his poor performance, I thought he had something to prove for the team.

Doc's legacy has been questionable to many but I always liked what he appeared to represent. I always liked what he had to say. He said "I'm a Celtic". Made me feel like one too. So I was okay with him leading the team. I felt like he had done a good enough job to stay on. Sure, some things could be done better, but the last 5 years he's done a solid job. 1 Title, 2 Finals, 3 EC Finals. I'll take it.

Now, there is reasons guys leave and you're fine with it. But the way these two left leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Ray left to go join the team that eliminated us the 2 prior years. Almost like a prima-donna who got his feelings hurt. Felt like he said "I'll show them" and in reality....he did. Ray's walking away with another Ring. The shot of the Finals and the term 2 time champion added to his legacy.

Doc who claimed "So many coaches talk team and I wanted to prove it" turned out to be a ring chaser. All talk. Snow job. Disloyal. Yeah, it can be said he didn't want to stick around for a rebuild. That he was right to go after rings because he had built himself up to that level. The fact of the matter is, he looked all of us Celtics fans in the eye and told us he was a Celtic and he was fine with a rebuild.

I'm with the OP on this. We got sucker punched in the stomach 2 years in a row. In the end we will probably be a better team to have went through this in the long run and the tarnish will wear down over time. But it doesn't feel like guys who call themselves Celtics or characterize themselves as Celtics should be taken too seriously anymore unless they either retire Celtics or Danny trades them away. In both cases, these two would have been welcomed to stay. And in both cases, they walked away.

I'm hoping Danny rebuilds us quickly. But I almost feel like it'll be awhile before we have another 5 years like those again.

Ray is a quirky O.C.D'er I think Rondo is too and part of why they couldn't co exist.

If you're naming "suspects" I'd not leave K (I bleed green) G out of your roll call. He is the only guy that has surprised me. When you say you love the___fans and love the _____Garden and you're gonna be buried in green...you gotta expect some folks to notice when you try to put on the white jersey without a peep. Thing is...everybody's NOT seeming to notice? Tired from bashing Ray or apologizing for Doc or demanding Danny's head?
