As for the rumors involving the Cavs, the Boston Celtics and forward Paul Pierce, sources confirmed the Cavs have indeed expressed an interest -- but the talks have yet to reach the level of seriousness conveyed by some reports.

• Following the departure of coach Doc Rivers to the Los Angeles Clippers, the Celtics are looking to gut the roster and shed salary, making Pierce and forward Kevin Garnett (and possibly even point guard Rajon Rondo) available. Word is, however, that Pierce wants to play for a contender, making the Cavs hesitant to be overly aggressive in his pursuit.

• Still, some sources indicated the Celtics have until the 13th pick to decide whether to accept the Cavs’ offer for Pierce. If not, those sources said, the Cavs will pull the trigger on the potential deal with the Mavericks.

That's a solid idea, assuming the money works (looks like it does).  Hinges on Pierce being willing to play for the Cavs (rather than a contender), though.

Pierce would probably need convincing to join a team other than the Clippers, unless KG were already on said team.  I think he could be easily convinced to join up with Dirk.

I doubt Pierce is better than Plan B or Plan C from the Mavs' perspective, though.  I imagine they'd prefer to sink resources into guys like Howard, Iguodala, and Smith.  Younger guys who can more consistently carry a load and have energy to complement Dirk, who like Pierce is an older finesse scorer who rarely makes an impact on the game with his athleticism anymore.

True, but if you're giving up considerable resources to get a guy, you probably want to know that he actually is interested in playing for you and won't be a locker room problem or threaten to retire or whatever, right?

If Pierce were traded to the Bobcats, I doubt he'd even bother going to Charlotte, for example.

If KG stays, he and Varajeo would be great together.

For me, two 2nd round draft picks are meaningless.

The TE is definitely of value, but it's not guaranteed the Celts would get to use it within the year.
