The only guy among those names who has the potential to be a true franchise player is Demarcus Cousins.

I wouldn't make any long term plans centered around any of the others.

i see Josh Smith as the obvious play and big move by DA with a possible 3-way trade with the Clips involving KG...do the Clippers still give up DJ and a #1...what would the Hawks want from us along with DAJ...maybe DAJ, AB & Lee or Bass...getting Josh Smith or maybe DMC in a 3-way deal is the only way i might accept KG leaving...all other moves require multiple drafts which is still a gamble...with that being said...I would be extremely happy to see KG and the Capt come back..i think only miami, indiana and possibly chicago are better than us...so...with a little luck, health and some moves by DA...i like the idea of running it back...i do not see the acquiring assets strategy panning out looking at who might be available...actually...DA will be using holdovers from last year's collecting the assets strategy...which i think was his idea all along...so the time to package our assets is now...not in the next year or two when there really is no one available...

Rondo ( esp playoff Rondo) is a world class baller. Jeff Green, he can win games and be a solid piece on a contender. The effect of the likes of Bass, Terry and Lee can be amplified in a system where they are playing to their strengths. Plus I don`t think we have seen Bradley or Sullinger hit their ceilings yet. We ain`t in the hunt for Chris Paul or Dwight Howard, but there are other players (and coaches) out there that can fill specific needs at a championship level. If  Ainge makes judicious trades out of our other assets, the vets and picks and unguaranteed contracts, I wouldn`t put it past him to assemble a roster in the style of the 04 Pistons. Well rounded enough not to need anyone particular superstar to carry us to glory on his own.

When I was reading that 2014, I couldn't help but think:

D. Lillard, K. Faried, G. Monroe, K. Leonard, P. George and Jimmy Butler are such great values right now.

How the heck did we end up with Jordan Crawford? We hit rock bottom.

For 2015: really unsure about Eric Gordon. I wouldn't give him a chance here. Seems to be attitude and/or injury issues with him that would make it too difficult for me to trust him to play a substantial role.

Good job on the list, but it doesn't include out out options. For example, next summer James and Bosh both have opt out options (Wade too, but I wouldn't want him due to age/knee concerns), which I expect them to exercise.

He's 6'11'' with the physical tools and skills to be a nightly 20-10-2 guy.  Of course he has the potential to be a franchise player.

Is he very likely to be one?  No, probably not, although I think there's a very good chance he grows into an All-Star caliber player, especially if he gets on the right team with the right coach.


My standard for "franchise player," by the way, is a guy you can build your team around for a significant length of time (4-5 seasons at least) and have a shot at being at least a fringe contender if you get the right supporting pieces.  Doesn't have to be a top 5 player who can carry a team to a championship.

Thought about it yesterday and now I think we should go after Big Al. He is a 4/5 who can score down low and grab rebounds, IMO he is really the type of player we need.

If we could somehow turn KG, PP Bass and maybe some scraps into Big Al and Smith, we would look pretty good, than we would need some shooters.

The next big, relevant free agent that signs with the Celtics will be the first. In my opinion, now that Doc is gone this happening is even less likely. Unless the Boston climate and Massachusetts taxes change drastically.

I also love all of the lineups I have seen everywhere on this blog that pencil in Melo as the team's backup center.

I share your skepticism about the Celtics ever attracting a major free agent.  Best chance would be to trade for a guy and then convince him to stay.

As for Melo, well, I don't think we really have a strong basis to conclude that Melo will or will not someday be a rotation caliber player.  Just need to wait and see.

Kendrick Perkins probably would have spent his entire first season in the D-League, too.

This is why a trade exception for Pierce would be so huge.  It opens up all of these sign and trade possibilities for this summer as they could just trade their player and get a huge exception and not really need anything else in return.

Al Jefferson makes a lot of sense in that regard as Utah is reportedly letting him go, so if the decision is made then a massive trade exception would be icing on the cake for them.

The most curious thing there about your list from 2013?

Danny Ainge has been linked to wanting all of them at one point.  I can see us adding one if not two of them really.

That's Sullinger in a nutshell, though, right? I mean, that's precisely Sullinger's skill set. Isn't this the year that you try to develop Sullinger into a new Al Jefferson on the cheap rather than going out to get the full-price model?
