…the owners, Danny, and doc all made this decision together. Not sure why many insist on ignoring that fact and want to turn it into a doc bolted situation.  This tweet from woj today is important:

“Before Clips offered 1st round pick to Celtics on Sunday, Rivers had informed Boston he planned to return for ’13-14 season, source tells Y!”

Doc was deciding between Boston and taking time off. This tweet tells you what he would have done had none of this ever happened as well. It tells you what he would have done if the clips never budged.  It tells you what would have happened if kg retired or pierce for waived in a couple of weeks.

Danny is the one who initiated talks wit the clips. I’m sure Danny also convinced the owners it is time for a true rebuild and not the rebuild on the fly danny, doc, and the owners envisioned when doc signed the extension in 2010.  thus they decided paying 7 mill for doc was too much. So Danny brought this up to doc with the idea of kg and pp joining him. Help the celts and get to a championship caliber team with you two favorite players all in one decision. Why wouldn’t doc say yes to Danny. These are things that have been reported by woj and Jackie…trusted sources. Yet people still see what they want to see.

Doc did more for this team than any of us and more than most that have even put on a celtics uniform.  Doc did good by the celtics for 9 years and till the very end. As a Boston born life long celtics fan, doc will always be a Celtic in my book. #ubuntu #banner17

Didn't Doc play for the Clippers? Hmmmmmmm

He was never a Celtic. He did give up on the team, and if you really believe he had decided to come back before he decided to leave, I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.

It takes 2 to tango.  Doc didn't want to go through a rebuild in some capacity and also ownership doesn't want to pay 7 mill for a coach when they know they won't be contending for at least the next few seasons.  Would you pay someone top dollar only to have 'meh' results?

Best of luck to Doc.  It wasn't entirely on him and it wasn't entirely on ownership/management.  They gave him that 5 year deal, but when push came to shove, in retrospect, both sides probably realized that it was something they didn't want to continue with any longer.

Or it tells you Doc (or Danny) put that info out in order to push the Clips into getting the deal done.

I think Ainge thinks much more of the person Doc is, rather than the coach he is. Meaning, he won't miss him as a coach - but he also had so much respect for Doc to want him to have to stay on a rebuilding team. It was clear that Doc and Danny agreed on this together.

If Doc were really interested in demonstrating loyalty to the franchise, he'd be committed to staying here as the coach through the upcoming rebuild.

If he were truly committed to staying through the rebuild, he wouldn't have ever agreed to going to the Clippers.

Therefore, Doc was not truly interested in demonstrating loyalty to the team or sticking around.  Doc absolutely did "give up on us" in the sense that he didn't have interesting in staying once his favorite veterans were not going to be around anymore.

It shows he had more loyalty for Pierce and KG than he did for the Celtics franchise, Danny Ainge, or Rondo.

Oh well.  It is what it is.

Or maybe, Doc *knew* this was coming, and signed a high value, long-term contract so that:

1) He would make good money
2) Danny could trade him

Perhaps that was clear from the get-go, as it sounds like the contract was actually perfectly fit for this scenario.

Just a different perspective. I don't really think any one of us knows the truth. So personally, I'll just give him the benefit of the doubt, and be thankful for his part in bringing us banner number 17.

Heck, I might even wish him well in LA.

Doc also signed that no-compete clause, which may have been the sole reason we're getting an unprotected 1st.

Perhaps Doc is going to destroy the Clips from the inside and land us the 1st pick of the 2015 draft  ;D

That's kind of the point I was getting at, yeah :) Doc isn't stupid, and with him and Danny being friends, I could see that part of the contract as a way for Danny to get what he wanted (trade value) whilst Doc could swim in money.

Good job on both of them. Love business deals where two sides win.

Good Lord.

Not sure why?

#1 Most folks already have strong views and nothing will change that. You have been or forums before....right?

#2 You believe the 1st mention of a return comes just after a departure?...Gee that was close. Good thing he didn't come out with that or have it on recordable media... that .. that woulda been really odd ???

Twitter apparently tells you a lot....I personally believe what I see...and not even then..
