I appreciate the optimism.

Scary thought, though:  Rondo turns 28 next season.  It's going to be hard to put championship caliber players around him before he starts to decline.

This worries me greatly. Rondo's age.

If Rondo were 25, I would be excited and optimistic about building a new team based around him. But at 28? Need an awful lot to go right quickly for that to work out.

Not liking the odds of that.

Been a Celtics fan since 81. Watched them dominate, watch bird retire, mchale go, bias die, lewis die, them stink, pitino, ml carr, o'brien, Doc, KG, 2008-now

I will always be a Celtics fan win or lose.

WE would be pretty good with DMC and Josh Smith before ROndo become an old man.

It all hinges on Danny or  the next GM ( I hope LARRY BIRD)  landing a STAR BIG , without that Celtics are going NOWHERE .

A lot might depend on how Rondo approaches things this year, with a new coach and a different set of players around him.

Will he be a leader and mentor? Or will he get frustrated that he's wasting his career on a terrible team? Etc.

I think Rondo will be traded eventually...

Been a fan since 2000. Been threw the mediocre team making small runs in the playoffs, been threw the lows of the 22 win season to turn it around for a banner.

Watching the rebuild is like watching your kids play. They suck, but when they do some thing well, you get excited. And win they win, you go out for Ice Cream! LOL.

I think we are in better shape then we were in the first rebuild. Rondo,Green,Sully,Jordan isn't bad, not great, but not bad. With depending on trades Maybe get a good shooting guard, or get a Millsap or Smith the team will be right back in it.

I really hope Rondo is ready for the beginning of the season. It would be fun to watch Rondo,Green,Jordan fun the floor, and with a new coach and new offense will be nice to.

We all new this would come some day, now its here. At least DA got a little some thing out of the break up instead of letting them walk ad being left with nothing.

And I know Jordan isn't ideal. But compared to some of the C's people wanted drafted this year, he's above most of them, at least the ones that would fall in our lap. Now maybe take a chance on Rice or Hardaway Jr and see if they can excel at this level.

Prepare to watch some sloppy basketball, and start rooting for losses and ping pong balls.

The glory days have returned.
You know man... honestly it's going to sting at first.  But at least we're heading in a direction.  I hated the feeling of being a sitting duck franchise and I've had that feeling since Shaq went down... this feeling like we we had ankle weights on and were slowly sinking to the bottom of the sea with no floaty to save us.  Our window opened and closed... we'd absolutely be better next season if we kept KG, Doc and Pierce... but it's not going to result in a title.  So we might as well bottom out so we can jump off ocean floor and start swimming back up to the surface.

Bottoming out was inevitable.  However, I'm a big believer that when a championship is at least within striking distance, you owe it to your plans and fan base to maximize that opportunity.

Sure, our odds of winning a title were slim, and were probably reliant on a Lebron injury.  However, I would still take those odds over the chances of our rebuilding efforts yielding a title contender within the next 5 years or so.

I agree completely with your logic but disagree about our chances with the current team. We would have needed not only a Lebron injury but:

(a) A return to form for Rondo
(b) A relatively healthy KG come playoff time
(c) Sully to be productive after his injury
(d) Pierce to be healthy
(e) one of Terry/Lee to have a very good year
(f) to sign a quality 10-15 mpg big guy
(g) Jeff Green to continue his good play

Now, even if all that happens we might have what, a 10% chance?

But here's the thing. Even if each of the above events has an 60% chance of happening, if they are independent events there is a a 3% chance that they ALL happen.

And combined with the 10% chance we have to win even with a healthy, high-performing squad, that gives us a 0.3% chance.

I'm not saying I have any basis for these numbers per se, but I'm using them to illustrate what is a very general point: once you recognize how many things have to go right for us to win it, the chances are very close to zero because you are betting on many, many things going right rather than one or two.

This has been our downfall in the Big Three era generally: we've had fragile teams. And while people will say "oh only that one thing went wrong that kept us from winning," like KG's knee or Shaq's achilles, there were in fact 10 things every year that had a chance of going wrong, and all together it was *very* likely that one or more of them would go wrong. That's the way it is when you have three stars (and other starters like Shaq , JO, Sheed, etc.) who are older and prone to injury.

Those issues would now have been magnified because two of our key young guys - Rondo and Sully - are coming back from serious injuries themselves.

Anyway, that's just my perspective. I think it was time to get any assets we could. Just getting a high lottery pick in 2014 is not enough. We need as many mid-level pieces as we can get, because those can be packaged too. I personally think that in Feb 2015 Jordan could be a valuable trade chip for a contender, as a big body on an expiring contract. And who knows - if he puts it together could he be as valuable as Al Jefferson was? Small chance, but maybe.

I also think that if we are not contending, Rondo may delay his return. This helps us to tank.

Ultimately luck will have a lot to do with it even in this scenario, of course. But I think we have improved our chances of winning a ring over the next 10+ years.

17 banners.

And I'm not talking conference either.

Celtic fan for life here.

Agreed. I hope the bandwagon fans finally leave so I can go to the games all the time again.

  • Eagerly Awaiting the Next Fantasy Draft
To me, you aren't really a fan until you have enjoyed the good but also survived the bad. The newer fans will be tested, and probably learn a lot about the team building aspect of basketball in the process.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Awe that's adorable.  You two became Celtic fans in 2007?  How sweet.

I often long for the days of Marcus Banks and Jiri Welsch.  It's cool, you guys can find another bandwagon.  Maybe you can come back in 5-10 years when we are relevant again.  No worries.  I'll still be here waiting.

Understand that for people who don't live in the US and thus never had a connection with the city the NBA team is playing in, what happens is fans follow players and learns to love the team afterwards. But it's because of the player that they followed the franchise, the team comes in second. That's just how it is for non-US based fans. So it's a legit question for those people, it's not because we "found a bandwagon" to ride with.

First of all, who cares when they became fans. If it's 2007 then so what, you loved the celtics longer and maybe more intensely but we're all part of the same "family" so whatever right ?

And second staticcc is right; overseas fans like me (from belgium) have no real reason to choose a team so they often start with players and fall in love with teams later. In my case it was a little different, was playing basketball for a couple of years (after a childhood filled with soccer) and was really loving it. Had a good friend who i played with and he followed the nba since he was little.

He's a laker fan but when i asked him which team i should check out in the nba he suggested the celtics as a team i'd like. I liked the look of the team so that was good already and then i started to watch some games and i quickly fell in love with mostly Big Al cause this was 2006. Yeah i fell in love with this team during our worst year (though ofcourse can't complain cause things QUICKLY got a whole lot better).

Anyway anyway you got to here, supporting the celtics and talking 'bout your favorite team, I for one am glad you're here.

There are plenty of fans from different cities and countries that follow the team and not the players.

Generally isn't that the whole idea of following a team or a team sport?

I´m a non-US fan, too, for over 20 years now. Was a fan of Bird as a little kid, but became a celticsfan for many more reasons.

If you´d ask me what I consider the greatest franchise in all of sports, I´ll confidently and proudly say "the Boston Celtics". Read up on some of the history of this team, the early days, it´s amazing.

Bird, Doc, KG, the captain...even Danny or the owners, they all could leave some day and do something different.

I can´t, I´ll stay. I´ve got nowhere else to go. I´m family. I´m only the ugly uncle from overseas, who smells a bit funny, but family nonetheless.
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

My wife has about killed me every year for the last ten years (or however long League Pass has been available) because of my incessant need to watch every Celtics game.

Make no mistake about it, I will continue to do so whether it is a tank job, contender or something in the middle. However, she is really going to have a poop-fit when I am watching every Clipper game as well.  I will root for KG and Pierce to get another ring.

This is how I feel.

The big difference for me will be the regular season. Over the last 3 years it has been maddening to watch us drop games to the likes of the Bobcats and Pistons, knowing we had far superior talent.

I expect that a rebuilding phase will bring a whole new perspective to the regular season of guys trying to prove themselves and grow. This will also be maddening when we see Jordan Crawford trying to assert himself as "the man" and Jeff Green tentatively embracing the "go to" role. But, it will be fun.

If you like seeing players develop and grow, you'll have a lot of fun moments with this new roster.

If you prefer to wait until the playoffs when in your opinion "those are the only games that matter", we'll probably see you in a couple years...

Been a fan since 1987 so I've been through some pretty rough times.  Certainly enjoyed the winning a lot more but as a fan you take the good with the bad.  My next phase as a fan will be watching it with my kids if basketball is something they take interest in.  We're not in Boston so while it's up to them hopefully they'll root for the C's (just not the lakers - on that they don't have a choice).

I think the hardest part will be listening to people declare guys like Gerald Green the future of the franchise.  There's a lot more to basketball than jumping high.
