but it's believed that Boston wants to wait until the draft later this month to see if it can make a trade to get something for Pierce instead of just setting him free.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Thanks for the link.
This could be part of Danny's next negotiating step. Threaten to damage the perfect picture of all 3 Celtics being a part of this deal.
If you don't want us to trade Pierce for a pick, keep one of your picks and give us Bledsoe. I think it's one thing people are overlooking, the fact that the Clippers always wanted Pierce in their plans too.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

So which teams fit the bill, as far as draft pick trade partners go?

I don't know if picks are out there.  If they are going to get anything for Pierce it's going to be a salary dump.

For salary dumps you're mostly going to get bad contracts.  There are two situations that might be "salary dumps" but not necessarily bad contracts.

Houston:  Pierce for Omer Asik, Jeremy Lin and Thomas Robinson.  Lin is a bad contract next season but Asik and Robinson are good young bigs that would start in Boston and are on reasonable contracts.  Lin could start until Rondo comes back from injury or gets traded.

Denver:  Pierce for Javale McGee.  McGee is a bench player getting $10 million a year.  He's a knucklehead so he's sort of overpaid.  But he has all-star athleticism and has shown that he can put up decent stats.  If we get Jordan trading for McGee would be a little redundant.  But two young centers for Rondo to lob to wouldn't be a bad thing either.  He could always be trade bait.

The bad contracts we could get by trading Pierce:
Pau Gasol
Eric Gordon
Cousins + Salmons, Marcus Thornton and/or Chuck Hayes (2 of the 3 bad contracts)

I don't think we could get any of those players for Pierce alone.

I'm not sure if I'd even want any of those players (outside of SAC's young talent).

I think the Houston deal is pie-in-the sky but as much as I'd hate to see PP go, I'd pull the trigger on that one in a heartbeat.  solves a bunch of issues for us.  New starting center, quality backup PG and a young big with some potential.  I like Asik and Lin a lot better than I like Jordan and Bledsoe

Why not just PAY someone to TAKE PIERCE ..   ::)

Danny should be fired and the Celtics sold to new owners willing to do what it takes to produce a winning product.

I don't think the Houston deal is that outrageous.  Houston could afford to get Howard and Chris Paul if they can drop another $15 million in salary, which is exactly what this deal does.  There isn't really another salary like Pierce's that would allow Houston to drop $15 million unless it's to another team with cap space, and it would most likely be after July 1st.  This deal would give Houston the jump on free agency and give them a Big 3 that would probably trump Miami's.

I think Danny's probably trying to trade Pierce for anything of future value that won't fill up our cap space beyond this year.

But how would they get Howard? Who would they trade?

I think they can get a lot more value for Pierce by trading him for an established player rather than targeting a draft pick.

I like the Houston deal, but if we are picking up that much long term salary, we would need to free ourselves of Bass/Terry/Lee. A rotation of Asik/Jordan, Sully, Green, Bradley, Rondo/Lin and picks is not good enough to justify being a repeat tax team

I think they can do a KG deal where they take back salary or a Pierce deal where they take back salary but not both.
