Here's another article from CBS about it not sure who his sources are but it's probably safe to say theres some truth to it. It's going to be real interesting in the coming week or so, if Doc's gone it'll be known soon. If Doc leaves then KG and Pierce probably are too...maybe Ty Lue is our head coach and Danny goes KABOOM!

SAN ANTONIO -- Doc Rivers and Danny Ainge are on the same page in wanting to avoid a rebuild of the Celtics, but it's not clear whether enough moves could be made to persuade Rivers to return for his 10th season as Boston's coach, league sources told CBSSports.com.

Nearly six weeks after the Celtics' season ended with a first-round playoff loss to the Knicks, Rivers remains noncommittal about coaching in Boston next season. His public comments on his future stand in stark contradiction to his immediate announcement that he'd be back after the Celtics lost to the Heat in the 2011 Eastern Conference finals. This time, after the Celtics lost to the Knicks in six games, Rivers said, "I'm coming back until I say I'm not."

Rivers, 51, has three years and $21 million left on the contract extension he signed after that loss to Miami two years ago. In his only public comments since Boston's season ended, Rivers told the Boston Globe this week, "I'd rather not say," when asked if he planned to coach the Celtics next season.

According to an NBA front-office source, Rivers has given indications he "might be ready for a new situation."

Rivers has been attending the Celtics' pre-draft workouts and huddling with Ainge to chart the offseason strategy -- one that could become an exit strategy for Rivers if the remnants of Boston's Big Three era can't be parlayed into moves that sustain the team as a championship contender.

"[Doc] has been pretty open that he doesn't want to coach in a rebuilding environment," said a person briefed on Rivers' conversations with Ainge. "And if they make some moves, they're not going to have a rebuilding environment. That's Danny's challenge."

Ainge, never wary of discussing bold moves, is in agreement with Rivers that a rebuilding of the Celtics' roster isn't ideal, sources said. But with an aging core and a payroll that is pushing up against the dreaded luxury-tax apron -- where the full mid-level exception, bi-annual exception and sign-and-trade acquisitions are restricted -- the Celtics' options are limited.

Paul Pierce, who turns 36 next season, has only $4 million guaranteed and could be let go. Kevin Garnett, 37, has more than $18 million guaranteed over the next two seasons and has been contemplating retirement. Given their age and the fact that Pierce, especially, could be available after a buyout or via the amnesty waiver process, the two remaining members of Boston's Big Three do not have significant trade value. Garnett also has a no-trade clause and would have to sign off on any deal sending him to a new team.

"They made a conscious decision a couple of years ago to kind of play it out with that group," a league source said. "Now, a couple of years later, there's an expiration date."

If Rivers became available, he'd immediately soar to the top of the list for every team still seeking a new head coach. The Nets and Clippers have previously been denied permission to interview Rivers for their vacancies. The Grizzlies are another team that would jump at the chance to sit down with Rivers if he walked away from the Celtics, sources said.

The Nets interviewed recently retired point guard Jason Kidd on Monday for their head coaching vacancy and came away impressed with his commitment and credentials. Brooklyn is meeting on Wednesday with Pacers associate head coach Brian Shaw.

If Rivers left the Celtics, they'd become the 13th NBA team to change head coaches this offseason.

I think Wyc has steered Danny to keeping the old guys together,

 

Of course, he is going to put up that front publically, because of the fan base and they want to look good.   It would be owner induced suicide for Wyc to say otherwise.   Fans would be really mad, this way ( Wyc saying one thing to us and another to DA) DA takes the blame and not Wyc. 

That may well be the case,we may be coming back one more time but indications from Doc possibly transitioning and not happy tell me that there is a real chance it could go the other way.  Doc won't be here with another rebuild.   He was fine with it before to restart his career but now he has a ring and coaching gravitas.

I think DA will do what he feels makes us a better team.  He has a history of not listening to the fans, the Perk trade for instance, but I think it was a good deal for us and we came out ahead.  A lot will depend on what other teams offer and what happens on draft night.   Who knows if he will move up, down or out.

Ainge has never been afraid to pull the trigger.   I think we are darn lucky to have him.  As for Doc, I hate small ball, I think he is a good coach in certain situations, but he is the type of coach who is only as good as his players.

Not now--I was referring mostly to the trade deadline last year and then after last season.  I think Wyc knows it is time to move on now.  And I'm just going on the interviews I've heard him give over the past couple of years.

I think Scal could be a coach someday.   I don't know if he is ready now and I hope he takes over for Tommy someday though.

Is Doc Rivers available to coach another team?

That seems to be the $21-million question being asked around the NBA on Wednesday about the Boston Celtics coach.

There are two things that are for sure.

If Rivers decides he doesn’t want to coach in Boston anymore, the Clippers would be interested in him and he would become their No. 1 choice, said several NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

The other thing is that the Clippers have not been actively pursuing Rivers, nor have they ever asked the Celtics for permission to speak with the coach, according to an executive.

For the Clippers to even think about hiring Rivers, they’d have to consider the many moving parts involved in making that happen.

Rivers has three years left on his contract that pays him $7 million per season.

Even though Rivers is considered one of the best coaches in the NBA, would Clippers owner Donald Sterling be willing to match that salary?

Not one NBA executive thinks so. But some of them believe Sterling might go as high as $5 million per season for someone like Rivers, several executives said.

Another issue for the Clippers to consider would be any sort of compensation the Celtics might require for Rivers if he walked away from his contract.

One NBA executive said the Celtics might ask the Clippers for two first-round draft picks over a three- or four-year period.

But the biggest problem is that Rivers has wavered on what he wants to do, even telling one NBA executive that he was “considering not coming back,” and “wasn’t sure” what his plans are.

Rivers and his assistant coaches have a meeting Thursday in Boston that was already planned, said one executive, and it had not been postponed.

yea....and when Doc goes to the Clips to win a title with one of the best PGs in the game, one of the best PFs in the game and a great bench, I hope you all don't start that 'he shoulda done that in Boston' thing -- dude is a average to above average coach. he's great on a front running team...not so much a team in transition

if none of these ppl are excited about coming back and desire to come back, i have no clue why we're holding on to them.

Id love a blow up/tank if we arent serious about putting another star next to Rondo, KG, Green.

Unfortunately Chris Broussard is completely FOS and makes this stuff up for 'insider' factor and internet hits.

People are reacting like this came from Docs mouth. It certainly didnt so dont crucify him for this bogus rumor stuff.
