With the 2013 draft coming up, I figure I would go back since Celtics won #16 to grades the #1 picks they have selected..Im only grading what they did in a Celtic uniform

1986-Len Bias (Maryland) F..could been an A+ if he played
1987-Reggie Lewis (Northeastern) A+
1988-Brian Shaw (Santa Barb) B
1989-Michael Smith (BYU) F...maybe worst pick ever
1990-Dee Brown (Jacksonville) A-
1991-Rick Fox (UNC) B-...Better Laker than Celtic
1992-Jon Barry (Georgia Tech) F
1993-Acie Earl (Iowa) D-
1994-Eric Montross (UNC) D
1995-Eric Williams (Providence) B..had some moments
1996-Antoine Walker (UK) A-...gave us the Walker Wiggle
1997-Chauncey Billups (Colorado) D-...could been an A
1997-Ron Mercer (UK) C..Never live up to potenial
1998-Paul Pierce (Kansas) A+
1999-NONE
2000-Jerome Mosio (UCLA) F
2001-Joe Johnson (Arkansas) C..could been an A
2001-Kedrick Brown (HS) F
2001-Joe Forte (UNC) F
2002-NONE
2003-Troy Bell (Boston College) F
2003-Dahtnay Jones (Duke) F
2004-Al Jefferson (HS) B+
2004-Tony Allen (OK State) A
2004-Delonte West (St. Joe's) C-
2005-Gerald Green (HS) D
2006-Randy Foye (Villanova) F
2007-Jeff Green (Georgetown) A-..Might become higher grade
2008-J.R. Giddens (New Mexico) F
2009-NONE
2010-Avery Bradley (Texas) B
2011-Marshon Brooks (Providence) F
2012-Jared Sullinger (OSU) B...back injury cost him A-
2012-Fab Melo (Syracuse) F

Alot of F on this list showing me the front office needs to better there scouts and quit trading players before they develop (Joe Johnson, Billups)

Yeah, this is a fairly inaccurate list you have here.

In any case, it's silly to even give Fab Melo a grade yet.

You can't just judge the picks based upon how they did in a Celtics uniform, but how they did relative to where they were taken and also what they may have gotten the Celtics in any eventual trade.

For example Gerald Green wasn't a great pick, and he didn't do that much in a Celtics uniform, but he showed enough potential to be part of the Garnett trade, which has to count for something.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

I graded the players what they did in a Celtic uniform only..this doesnt include what the picks like Bell and Jones brought us in trade...forgot about Allen, lol but i put him in..Melo did nothing for us last year so i gave him an F..hopefully he can be an A in the future

And, the Mavericks get an F for drafting Robert "Tractor" Traylor with the sixth pick in the 1998 draft.  Never mind that they traded him for Dirk Nowitzki.

The point here is that looking at these picks in the narrow vacuum of "what did player x do for the team that drafted him?" doesn't really make that much sense.   The grade should be based on whether or not a given draft pick was able to be useful to the team in some way or another.

Right now, the only one that really stands out as "bust" in the Ainge era is JaJuan Johnson (and even JaJuan gave us--or at least me--a few moments of excitement in his rookie season).

SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas

C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

Some seriously unfair grades here.

Chauncey Billups, Joe Johnson, and Len Bias were A+ picks given where they were taken and the talent they had and what they turned into or could have turned into. The scouting department of the Celtics, who you are criticizing, did their jobs with those picks.

As someone else said, Troy Bell and Dahntay Jones were traded for Perkins and Marcus Banks. Again, the scouting staff did their job here as I would say Jones and banks both were about the same in total career achievement and Perkins was a very good pick. Maybe a C- and a B for those two players respectively.

Jeff Green, Randy Foye, and Marchon Brooks weren't even picked by the Celtics for the Celtics. The Celtics picked them for other teams. green and Foye eventually turned into Ray Allen and Big Baby. Brooks turned into JJJ.

And it is inherently unfair to judge Melo based on not playing last year. He was developing, much like Perkins was developed his first year by not playing. If Melo is a rotation player in a couple years, then the C's made the right move by handling him the way they did this year.

And what about the success the C's have had in the second round with players like Ryan Gomes, Glen Davis, and Leon Powe to name a few? No credit for the scouting department there?

Are you grading the draftees as players, or as value?

I'll use this as an example:

Quote
1991-Rick Fox (UNC) B-...Better Laker than Celtic

Fox was clearly the best player of all players picked at or after his draft position.  He was the absolute best possible pick the Celtics could have made.

Is it fair to give the Celtics a B-, if they got the best available player?
