I think I'm the only one here who really like Bargnani's game. Even so, I think I won't want him here. He's not the 7 footer we need.
So you really like a big man that averages less than 5 RPG for his career while averaging 30+ minutes? I like his outside shooting but there's nothing else in his game I like.
Please do look at his stats. He had an awful year this year, but over the four years prior to that he averaged over five rebounds (just). Yes that is awful for a 7 footer, but he also averaged around 17-19 points per game.
His game doesn't match up with KG's very well at all, but he has far more upside than any player we would realistically be able to get for Bass/Lee/Terry. Bass isn't a stellar rebounder, nor does he score at will and he is a jump shooter to boot. We have a log jam at SG and Terry and Lee were both fairly disappointing (although I think Lee just underachieved and can bounce back).
As somebody else mentioned we are going to be hamstrung by the cap for the next few years anyway and no one we could trade bass and lee for has more upside than a guy like Bargnani. I'd be happy to take a chance on a guy like that and hope somehow he turns it around because to have a real chance we probably need a miracle given that we can't bring in a difference maker via FA and our core is about to cash in its pension.
If we can get Bargs AND another piece like Ross, Gray or a pick I'd jump all over that if all we are sending back is our trash.
His playing style fit is all wrong, but at least he could provide some offence and being 7 foot occasionally a rebound should bounce off his head and into his hands.
If we are running it back we are a team of limited options unless we are willing to give up anything of value. At a certain point I'm ready to bet on talent (which he has, even if you haven't seen it lately) for guys who seem to be lost out there.
I guess it all depends on where Danny decides to take this team, but I don't understand why people are turing their noses up at a guy who has had some very solid seasons in the recent past when all we are giving up are players who most Celtics fans have been complaining about all year.
