I imagine Cleveland will wait a year or two before moving Varejao out to make way for Noel.

I don't think it helps Boston's trade chances any. Not this summer.

Cleveland should move Andy immediately.

They're in a unique situation. The 2014 draft is loaded. Nerlens Noel won't be back til at least mid-December.

If Andy's not in their long term plans then you really don't want him on your team helping you win because the best thing for you is a return to the lottery so you can enter next summer with:

Kyrie Irving, Nerlens Noel, 2014 lottery pick, Tristan Thompson, Dion Waiters and about 30 million dollars in cap space.

Cleveland should be calling teams with the proper cap space and see if they could swipe another draft pick for Varejao

I've been long on the Jeff Green for Anderson Varejao straight up train and I think that is more likely now.  Pairing Noel with Thompson and Zeller pretty much sets the Cavs down low and Green is a big upgrade of Alonzo Gee.  Seems to make a lot of sense for Cleveland, especially with Varejao's injury history.

For Boston it makes sense if they are going all in for one more run.  Varejao, if healthy, is more valuable to Boston than Green, and Varejao is expiring after the year (or has a team option for 14/15).  Thus, he comes off the books sooner than Green, which would make more sense in a rebuilding situation.

Yup, well said. Jeff Green fills a need for the Cavs and Varajeo DEFINITELY fills a need for us.
sure it shores up the big guy need. but it also creates a MASSIVE scoring problem. the c's had lots of trouble scoring this year. that's why they lost to the knicks.
Jeff Green for his career is at 13.6 ppg.  If you are relying on him to be a scorer you are going to be let down big time.

And let's be realistic, as much I would move Rondo, having him would help the offense a lot.  The team is just better at that end with its floor general setting everyone up.
Jeff Green the 2nd half of the season/playoffs averaged close to 20 pts a game. He was the Celtics' leading scorer and best offensive weapon by a large margin in the playoffs.

i'm not following how adding rondo, subtracting your best athletic scorer in Green, and adding a big defense/rebounding first big in Varejao does for the Celtics. Do people still expect Pierce and KG to be the main scoring options in this team??? The C's should be more forcused on acquiring scorers than acquiring an ok center atm.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Funny thread so far - some really value Varejao [for Jeff Green], while others don't think much of him [Lee OR 1st rnd pick]. I am hesitant - I know Andy is a great rebounder and defensive player, but he isn't getting any younger. If we are going for one last big attempt at a championship, I try to see if we can get him for a lesser package - no way do I give up Green.
