by coaching. Is there any other team in the league that has to wonder whether its coach (under contract) is coming back?

I don't see that attitude at all.

why is he always 'retiring' at the end of the season?

He's not retiring at the end of every season, he's taking it one season at a time and not deciding until after the season is over.  Ainge was willing to give him a long-term contract so that he wouldn't ever feel forced out of the job.

Some in the media may be speculating that Doc would rather retire or go elsewhere if the Celtics begin rebuilding, but just because they talk about it doesn't mean it is actually true.

Ainge recently said of Doc:

Quote
Doc is always unsure. Coaching is very, very draining. Every year with Doc, he’s had to go home and sort of recharge and ask himself that question, ‘Is this something that I’m passionate about and want to continue doing?’ I understand that. And we sort of give him time to unwind and relax, and after a couple of 92s on the golf course, he usually comes back.

I think that is an entirely reasonable attitude for Doc to take.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Plus, lets not forget family is the most important thing in Doc's life. Money isn't a huge issue for him, he's been well compensated and I'm sure he's managed it well. For Doc it has to be a passion every year; and taking a year or two off between jobs is probably very appealing.

I don't think he's doing us a favor in his own mind, I think he's weighing his desires and coming to a decision. It's not like if Doc walked away he'd have to do penance as an assistant somewhere (like Lawrence Frank or Flip Saunders), Doc just has to say, 'Im ready to coach again, and take his pick of what will assuredly be over a dozen offers between college and pro teams.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
why is he always 'retiring' at the end of the season?

Hs been with the C's for 9 seasons, he doesn't know if KG and pierce will be back each season, it's hard to start over with a new crop of kids after a championship squad. He also has family and this job means you're on the road so much away from home.

Your question...why does doc act like he's doing the C's a favor?

My question...why do so many celtics fans love to burn rivers for every little thing after all he's given to our organization?

Gimme a break.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

It's all about interpretation and people like to transform insignificant news to a drama.
Look at pierce family supposing relocation. They always go somewhere each year for the summer, but no, people like to interpret it the wrong way again and think pierce is retiring or something like that.
I wish we could talk more basketball and less drama here...

This is something I don't think people realize. There's a lot of Doc hatred on this board but if he were ever to hit the open market, the mans phone would ring for days. Must tell you something

I have seen many companies hire CEO's only to fire them later.....and coaches get fired all the time.....I think doc would be hired fast, and fired fast..in one season from most other teams. He only did somewhat good here because of KG.we all saw when kg was out, we went on a losing streak.kg runs this team....a guy like doug Collins did really good with very little players....doc never did better than his players.....

I have read all your comments, and the verdict is DOC IS DOING US A FAVOR BY COACHING. Your reasons are:

1. He does not need the money.

2. He has a family

3. He should not have to go through a rebuild.

PLEASE DANNY GET US A COACH THAT IS HUNGRY, that is dedicated to the Cs, and a coach that does not mind teaching. Thanks Danny, because NOBODY should be bigger than the Organization.

Obviously he did good because of his stars. Phil Jackson did good because he had Jordan AND Kobe. Carlisle did good because he had Dirk and a good set of role players. Erik Spo did good because he had LeBron.

Stars run this league. No coach, no matter how good he is, is going to make a garbage team like the Bobcats beat the Heat.

You need talent and this should be obvious.

What do you expect out of Doc? To beat everyone with or without stars?

No, I expect him to do his job. Coach the players, teach the young ones, and develop the talent. Don't run our stars into the ground. And stop acting like he is being charitable to the organization. Act like you really want to be here for the long term or move to whatever dream job you long for, possibly the Lakers.

Frankly I think it is a slap to the organization that he has to weigh every year if he is coming back. Are there any other teams with this issue with their coach?

erik spolestra is a front ofr pay riley.....he is learning at best......we'll see what about doc...but I have seen enough out of him.....he is a background manager at best....not a coach.
