The correct answer is one of each.

A big that does both would be best, but, unfortunately very few, if any, bigs like that exist any more.

You mean between the 2 they have to score, rebound and defend?

We have Sully who can rebound.

Big who scores and defends...but can't rebound? That's a rare combination.

Although Sully has grown into a solid defender, I'm pretty sure what we're talking about is an anchor defensively. As a help defender he draws charges but he isn't intimidating.

Sully has scoring potential I guess.

So we need a defensive big. As many have said.

Come to think of it, weren't we half decent with Jason Collins? I think I've repressed those memories of the mess that is early-mid-season 2012-13 Celtics.

Kind of wish we got Ezeli now. I can see why Ainge jumped on Moultrie and PJIII. Still hoping for Melo.

Steve Adams? We're talking long run here.

This is looking like a krook post with all this thinking out loud.

I would like a well rounded big who can score down low and finish at the rim who can rebound and defend.  Though I agree it's rare these days.

Regardless if it's a defensive types and not all defensive guys can rebound, look at Perk, we need a guy who can catch the ball on dump offs and opps if we are keeping Rondo.

i'm assuming when he said "scoring" big, he meant someone who has some shooting range and has good post moves and footwork, but is more or less an average-to-weak rebounder for their size and someone who can't really defend all that well in the post or on weakside help.

When he said rebounding/defensive big, i assumed he meant someone who can't manufacture their own shot, but constantly fights for rebounds, blocks shots, plays good post D and is capable enough to catch a ball and dunk it or lay it in or put it back.

I guess it's someone like Larry Sanders/Andre Drummond/Derrick Favors vs. someone like Chris Kaman/Andrea Bargnani?

David Lee, while a dbl-dbl machine able to pour in 20 isn't a defensive liability.

Yes he absolutely is a liability defensively, so is Dirk for what its worth.

I would rather have a rebounding big. Rebounding bigs can score without really being a "scoring big"

*CB Miami Heat*
Kyle Lowry, Dwayne Wade, 13th pick in even numbered rounds, 18th pick in odd numbered rounds.

Easy. A rebounding big who can defend.

We're going to have to address our woeful perimeter game this summer, as well, but a big can't figure into that.
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

For this current team I would prefer a defensive big who is an a over a stage rebounder. However if building a team from scratch I would want a big who is at least capable of bei g the 2nd option on offense. In the playoffs the game slows down and dumping the ball to the post become invaluable.

Since defense and rebounding is all about effort and heart, if a big is willing to put the work already, he can learn to score.  If he is not willing to put the effort into defense, scoring will be  immaterial anyway.

Maybe the best comparison, albeit on a lower talent level would be Jason Collins or Chris Wilcox. Doubt it is perfect but That's how I understand it. Just now I'm for the defensive rebounder. We need to plug the gaps in our defense before we can start diversifying on offense.

Our historically poor offensive output in the first round this year drove home the point that we need scorers!!!! At any position!!!! We need guys that can get to the basket and put pressure on the opposing defense, give me a scoring big man any day, as long as he does his scoring in the paint. No jump shooting big man, we have enough of those, and when defenses tighten, jump shooting percentages drop. We need paint scorers!!!!

Rebounding/defensive big.  Rebounding is an offense and defense all in its own.

If I had a wishlist, it would be someone with the game of a young 'Sheed without the attitude.
