I'm just trying to get a pulse on why you want to keep them?
What's your reason?

Without PP and KG this team will fight between 12-15 place in East.

I guess from a sentimental standpoint, everything they have given to this organization, especially Pierce.  KG came and changed the landscape of it, but Pierce was here through thick and thin.  A lot of fans feel a connection with these 2 because of their heart, desire, etc.

Outside of that, I think it is best for the team, in terms of progression, to move on and try to build for the future now, as we can't win the championship with them as cornerstones of the franchise anymore.  If there's a way to keep them around but decrease their roles, and let someone else step up or if there was some way to bring in a big name then I'd be all for it.  I don't want to see Pierce and KG move to another team/retire/whatever...but, it looks like that's the direction things may be headed if we can take anything from various reports at this current juncture.  There's always that fine line between supporting individual players and the organization as a whole.  Going to be a sad day when the two of them hang it up or move on to another organization, but we, as fans, knew that the team would eventually come to this crossroads and have to give it serious thought.  That window was supposed to only be opened for 3 or 4 years and they were able to stretch it to 6, albeit I think this year was a mistake in retrospect, but it is what it is.  It's been great seeing relevant basketball again, but that's the nature of the beast.  Sometimes you have to take a step back to hopefully advance 3 steps forward in the future.

Because, if Rondo/Sullinger return healthy and Jeff Green continues to give us 16-17ppg then this team is INSTANTLY better than last year.

Pierce/KG are no longer #1 and #2 options....especially in the playoffs. They are #2, #3 complimentary options with Rondo being our #1...without Rondo, they are forced to try and carry the team which they obviously cant do anymore.

lets not forget, Rondo basically carried us through the 76ers, Miami series last year as Pierce/Allen played horribly

if we have Rondo in this playoff series, I think you could say that the Cetlics end up winning in 6. this guy is an all-star in the NBA

now, you add Green who can average 17ppg, and Sullinger who was averaging 10/10 before his injury and its a totally different team talent wise.

if we can find complimentary players to Rondo better than KG/Pierce, then sure...but if not I say bring them back

The question is, if we buy out Pierce for 5 million, and KG retires, can we get anyone worthwhile with the free cap space to justify getting rid of them?

I doubt it. I would rather keep Pierce and KG, give them one more year with a healthy Rondo, and hit the 2014 free agent market hard.

 +1000000000

People talk very easy to rebuild, but it's complicated and it's a process. As I've always said, Pierce and KG just need good pieces, with Rondo averaging healthy and Green 15/20 pp. point.
KG year after year has said that he needs help, and no, he needs a strong center, Ainge not correct in their decisions, not Andersen, not K-Martin (they were avalaibles as FA).
Garnett & Pierce never had a great team, but they were younger and won in 2008 and finals in 2010, also had good parts, Sheed, Posey, House, Nate ... now they are older and can not play 40 minutes,Ainge has not built a good roster and PP & KG without help year after year.
I would trade to Lee, Crawford, Bass, Bradley, these players are not fit to play for Celtics, sorry. Celtics need quality players.

I think there is little point in letting them leave this summer if you are not willing to trade off Rondo too and enter a full rebuilding process. Start again with a blank canvas.

So I am inclined to keep them for now and reassess mid-season prior to the trade deadline.

I believe this team can be a legitimate second tier contender next season with a solid free agent center.  I think it would be a waste of a year of Rondo's prime to not try to win next season if a solid big man can be acquired.

Sorry but this team was BELOW .500 when Rondo was healthy.  His return is not going to be much of a difference maker.

Are people actually STILL using this argument?

Unless they take significant pay cuts,  you can't.  I'm shocked that after what we saw this series people are still trying to make this argument.  Niether of them can play unless there are four days between games anymore.   Pierce looked like an 80 year old man last night.  Garnett wasn't much better on a day's rest.

Their salaries holding this team hostage right now.  And it seems the fan's are so scared to do what has to be done because they still think about the early 2000's. They've let sentimentality cloud their judgement of what's been long over due.  Ainge fell into the same trap.

Well said my friend. After getting crushed by Miami in 2011, then getting singlehandedly crushed by Lebron in game 6 last year and then getting owned by the lowly Knicks this year, I don't know how anyone can still want the same team brought back. Ugh!
