The next time he steps on a court in a playoff game he'll be 1 of 11 players ever to total 850 assists and 550 rebounds in his postseason career. The current 10 people in that list are Jason Kidd and 9 HOFers. And Rondo's just entering his prime. He's probably only about 20 playoff games away from 4th all time in career playoff assists as well. Obviously one could start listing the things he's done that only a handful of players in nba history (HOFers or actives like Nash) have done, but don't sleep on where he ranks in career postseason hierarchy when his career is less than half over.
Lebron will probably beat him to #11 (he needs just 51 assists, which he should get this year), but either way I don't think that hurts the argument.

Rondo needs at least 4 more years of fairly similar play to get his regular season numbers, awards, etc. where they need to be for making the HOF.  I do expect him to get in, he just isn't there yet.

Funny, if he needs 51 he just missed what I was looking at.
Yep, after the Bucks series Lebron has 799 assists.  Since joining the Heat he has averaged about 6 assists a game in the post season, so with that pace he will get to 850 this playoff season unless he gets hurt or Miami gets upset by the Bulls or Nets.

People probably thought the same thing about Anfernee Hardaway (4x All-Star, 3x All-NBA), Gilbert Arenas (3x All-Star, 3x All-NBA), Brandon Roy (3x All-Star, 2x All-NBA), and countless others.

Can't take the future for granted, or think a short career is that special in the broad scheme of things.

He's on a solid path though.

Good points, especially Penny--can you imagine if he'd been injury free?
Speaking of Penny, I promise every video I see of him, every comment I read about him on different sites or every person that I know of who speaks about Penny says the same thing you posted.
I think he's one of the only players that everyone has the same comment when they speak of his talents and his potential.

To the OP, I think he can be one but he's not there yet.
He has to prove himself a bit more but what he's accomplished in his 6 years have been amazing. I hope this injury doesn't affect him in the future because I really enjoy watching Rondo especially when he's on or in playoff mode.

Is this thread for real?

Its a question? This forum was created to debate certain topics. I created this thread, because of all the recent Rondo bashing, so I wanted to know what people thought about Rondo potentially being a HoFer.
He's got half of his career left, and has been a role player for half of the completed half. What do you think? :P

Hmm... since the 2008 playoffs, Rondo assisted at least 36% of all shots for the C's when on the floor.   And he was on the floor a LOT.   Actually, as of the 2008-2009 season, that number was never less than 39% and often much higher (both regular season AND playoffs).

Hard to justify the description of him as a 'role player' in the face of those numbers.

NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.

"Role player" come in different shapes and sizes. Not every role player is Bruce Bowen, who played defense and camped in the corner for the short three.

In 2009, Rondo was still supporting cast to Pierce, Allen and Garnett. But in a land where peopel seriously discuss Jason Terry as a potential hall of famer, one can sure jump the gun on Rondo, too.

Jason Terry was nothing but a Sixth Man imo... Sure he was clutch, but a HoFer is someone who steps up consistently, and puts his best on every game.

If we're comparing careers between the two, Jason has a far effective career, but have no doubt in 2-3 years Rondo will indefinitely have a far better one.

08-09 was kind of a split season for Rondo. He was definitely running the offense for the bulk of the year (that was IIRC the year "as goes Rondo, so go the Celtics" caught on) and his stats picked up when KG was out. His time as a role player on the Celts clearly ended by the time the playoffs came around.

Okay, so put James on the list, using a pen and not a pencil. Doesn't exactly water down the group obviously.

Not yet. Give him a few more years of high level play and hopefully deep playoff runs and he'll definitely get consideration.

Rondo may or may not make the Hall of Fame, but my Penny Hardaway rookie card is definitely lost forever. :'(

Tony Parker is at 803 assists, 497 rebounds, so he may also be added to that list prior to Rajon.  Impressive nonetheless and Parker is a likely Hall of Famer also.

Simmons puts Parker as the best international player the NBA has ever seen.

I'm not sure I can disagree.

Possibly, although he's meandering towards that with his 3 rebounds and 6 assists a game. He's probably looking at next year as well, even if they advance to the finals.
