I'll just echo what Chuck said over at RedsArmy:

"The Celtics looked like a poorly coached team . . . I'm not saying they are.  Just an observation."

I'll be honest, I don't see how anyone can watch the Celts play and come to the conclusion that the Celts are a poorly coached team. I'm not saying that because of my observations watching the team, but my observations watching opposing teams. Some of the undisciplined play and the mental gaffes that you see on a regular basis are fairly mind-boggling.

I think it's difficult because the Celtics are playing with quite a few cards missing from their deck right now.  This season has been an enormous challenge for the coaching staff, I don't doubt.

But this team completely fails to run even the most rudimentary of offensive sets, as a whole seems to give up pretty quickly.  Like KG said, they let the Knicks kill their spirit and didn't give any punches back.  I can't blame anybody who sees that and concludes that maybe Doc and his staff aren't doing the best job with this group right now.

When Rondo went down Doc said that he needed to change the offense and go to a more transition based team because the team he had would have trouble executing a half court offense without Rondo. Danny pretty much said the same thing, so did some of the players. Many people who watch the Celts were too enthralled with the mid-season hot streak the team went on to pay any heed to those claims but it's hardly surprising that they were accurate.

It's not bad coaching that the Celts are having trouble scoring in the playoffs without Rondo, it was more good coaching that they were able to mask their shortcoming for a while.

  • You say when......
Spot on.Doc's only team to win was totally stacked...it needed no coaching, and had kg to do it anyway.....he had great teams after that...produced nothing......he is only good as a #3 coach....an assistant...a last minute play guy....nothing else.....do you need MORE proof....LOL, how many more years of this performance do you need....get Doug Collins...or O'Brien back.....

You could be right.  That's why, like Chuck, I'm going to reserve judgment on it.  I just know the Celtics have looked totally awful for a while now.

Come on... that's a really weak scapegoat.  Doc is a fantastic coach.  It's not his fault the talent on this team is dreadful.   He got this team to overachieve mightily the last couple years.  KG and Pierce are on their last legs... Green is aiight... the rest of this team is fodder right now.

I don't think this is a poorly coached team or a poorly managed team at all. What I believe is that we're seeing the combination of not having any above average offensive players and unrealistic expectations.

Yes, Paul Pierce is a very good offensive player - in stretches. At 35 years old, he just can't do it consistently anymore. And honestly its not fair to expect him to. Jeff Green is talented guy, but his offensive game lacks versatility (for starters: he can't go left, he has no pull up jumper) necessary to be a #1 option.  Even when Rondo was healthy, he's more suited as a complementary guy who can be dangerous - he's more of an opportunistic scorer than a guy who can give you 15-20 pts consistently. What we have is a team full of 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th offensive options. We were always going to be an offense by committee and therefore offense was going to be our Achilles heel.

2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

you thought we should own the knicks? Doc has been punked by mike Woodson...I love doc as a person but I am dead tired of this myth he's a great coach...um no...there's nothing that makes him any better then a middle of the pack mike Woodson....reality.

Mike Woodson has Carmelo Anthony.

Anddddd doc had kg, pierce, Ray Allen and rondo when they won a title? Mike Woodson still almost out coached him with a below.500 hawks team in the first round that year.

I was kind of being tongue-in-cheek when I said we'd own the Knicks.  It was a long shot.  KG and Pierce haven't played like KG and Pierce.  But honestly, I figured if those guys were 100%, we could at least channel how well we played post-Rondo.  That didn't happen.  And that didn't have anything to do with Doc Rivers.  Our old guys are playing like old guys (KG is playing injured and something is up with Pierce). Green has been ok... the rest of the team is crap.  Blaming Doc is foolish.   This team is built around the talent of 4 stars (KG, Pierce, Ray, Rond)... 2 of them are gone and the other 2 are playing like elderlies.  What the heck do you expect?? lol

To me it is more of what he did and didn't over many years...not the knicks series.....it is past time for doc to go....it still amazes me that he could not get more than one championship out of these players........

Some of the undisciplined play and the mental gaffes that you see on a regular basis are fairly mind-boggling.

A couple of "recent" examples, a 5 second violation after a timeout in the first half for the Knicks, or having the ball in your own end with about 45 seconds left in a tie game and waiting about 22 seconds to get off a shot so you don't get a 2 for 1. There were more that I noticed but those stand out. We make mistakes from time to time but they're generally based more on poor execution than overall confusion.
