I've lived in NYC for the past ten years, but I'm a New Englander by birth and sports fandom, so my perspective on the Celtics vs. Knicks (and all New England vs. New York teams) is slightly different from most fans.

You see, since I moved to the city I have seen only two NY fan bases who have consistently supported their teams year-in, year-out.  Those teams?  The Giants and Rangers.

The Giants have been good during that time, but their fan base is deep-rooted and football is the most popular sport in this country.  The Rangers have not been consistently good over the past ten years, but surprisingly their fans have stood by them without a hitch.  The two things that stand out about these fan bases are that they're multi-generational and they're as supportive and stubborn as Bostonians.

The Yankees don't count because fans only show up when they're winning championships (like Heat fans), and they abandon the team immediately when a championship isn't preordained (like former and future Heat fans).  I respect old Yankees fans (e.g. Mattingly fans or Mantle fans) either because they stood by the team when they sucked in the '80s or are old enough to remember when baseball was telecast in black and white, but I don't respect the innumerable young Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.s who wear Yankees caps because they're hip.  They're not fans; they're fashion lemmings.

Every other fan base in NY is fair-weather, and no two teams exemplify this more than the Jets and the Knicks.

Lucky for me, the Jets are so often comically bad that I get a nice chuckle out of their obnoxious, mostly obese, fan base.

But, not during my first nine years here have I ever seen Knicks fans crawl out of the woodwork and rise up with such arrogance.  There is always Spike Lee, but he's a clown who can be ignored.  I'm talking about run-of-the-mill guys who I work with or play basketball with, or see on the street.  I'm talking about people who I have never seen near a Knicks game or a piece of Knicks merchandise who suddenly wear JR Smith jerseys to work and spout off incessantly about how the Knicks' offense is the best the League has seen in years.  Ugh!  It's tough to have a discussion with an idiot.

These fans have already dismissed the Celtics.  They've also dismissed the Pacers, Nets, Bulls, Hawks, and Bucks.  It's Heat vs. Knicks, apparently, and we're all just waiting to catch up to the prophecy.

I'll tell you one thing about Knicks fans.  I've been to over a dozen Celtics vs. Knicks games at MSG over the past ten years, and every single game has had an overwhelmingly large crowd of Boston fans.  I saw KG hit a game-winner in MSG a few years back and the crowd literally erupted with cheers.  Must have been a night of protest for Knicks fans.  Maybe there was construction on the subway lines.  Or, maybe their fans just don't show up year-in, year-out.

Today, however, I have to let Knicks fans' insults and predictions pass in one ear and out the other.  I'm tired of these guys, and it hasn't even been one full season.

So, I pose this question to all you Celtics' fans:

Is it enough for you if the Celtics knock the Knicks off in Round 1 (and lose in Round 2)?

I still honestly believe that even without Rondo the only team in the East that can challenge the Heat is the Celtics.  I don't believe any other team in the East can take the Heat to seven games (Chicago is close, but their offense is actually worse than the Celtics).  But, I'm realistic, and I doubt the Celtics will be playing in the ECF.  I'd be very happy to see the Celtics knock the Knicks down a peg and give a valiant effort in Round 2.  From then on I won't hold out hope, but I will be content with sending the Knicks packing.

What are your thoughts?

I'm a New Yorker too and I'd like to shut up the Knicks fans, definitely. Let Brooklyn lose too.

Celtics for life.

No. Goal should be to win a championship, not just make it by round 1.

That's always been the "Celtic way" and the way it should be.

Championship or bust.

I agree with the sentiment.  I would also choose "Win Championship" over "Beat Knicks in Round 1 and Lose in Round 2".

But, I'm asking if you'd be content come the end of May if all the Celtics could muster this post-season was a defeat of the Knicks in Round 1.

I would obviously be disappointed by a defeat in Round 2, and it would open up rampant speculation of sweeping changes to come, but I think the under-manned Celtics could earn some serious fan pride points by knocking off a loud-mouth, overrated Knicks team.

Regardless, I'll be wearing my Celtics gear to work during the entire series.  Let's go Cs.

No, I'd be disappointed. Like I was disappointed last year when the Celts surprised everyone by making it to game 7 of the ECF but still lost. But, that's just me. As for the Knicks, they won't be easy to beat and I actually don't think we will beat them. BUT, again I didn't think the Celts of last year would make it very far, so who knows.

Nothing besides a championship would be "Enough" for me. Especially just getting out of the first round. What are we, the atlanta hawks now?

I'm curious. All of the Celtic fans who are 30+. How did you feel during the Bulls runs in the 90's? Were you pleased to be seeing arguably the Greatest Player of All time playing at the highest level? Did you just accept that the Celtics wouldn't contend for an entire decade? What did you do?

Not being sarcastic or anything, i literally would like to know because I can see a similar run about to come from Miami.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
It's never enough, but I'd be lying if I said I thought this team could go much farther.

It's never wise to doubt this team, but I just don't see it this year.

The thing with the Bulls was, they were never really any sort of rival of the C's.  Detroit was, and was the team that took us down, but the Bulls were the team that took them down.  The Bulls really had nothing to do with the Celtics not contending.  The Celtics just got progressively worse from '88 on, until they were about the worst team in the league.

Jordan didn't bother me at all.  And I did always enjoy seeing the Knicks get beat by the Bulls.  Plus, I was kid when Jordan played, so he was like the coolest thing on Earth.  Kids are like that, adults not so much.

Call me a bad fan, but I sort of don't want them to.

I don't hate the Knicks.  I guess I'm not old enough to hate them.

I do hate the Heat, though, and the Knicks have the best chance of anybody in the East of unseating the Heat.  The Celtics don't have a prayer.

I also would be happy to see Carmelo turn this career season into a Finals run, or even a first title.  Anything rather than see LeBron win again.

I wouldn't mind if Lebron James won 7 rings and retired as arguably the greatest player of all-time. The NBA would have another dynasty and in turn another franchise with a storied history. This run by Lebron would also mean that Kobe Bryant and the Lakers don't get another 'ship thus catching the Celtics.

That's how I view it.

Ugh.  I don't think Kobe Bryant not winning another championship and LeBron not ruling the next decade of the NBA are mutually exclusive.

I'd prefer neither to happen.

In general, I really don't want to see one or even two teams dominate the league for 5+ years.  Then each season just becomes about waiting for those two teams to face each other in the playoffs.  I'd rather there be some suspense, while still giving us some really epic playoff matchups.

I'd rather see a new version of the 2011 Dallas Mavericks make a run in the playoffs each season than watch a "superteam" like the Heat win every year.

Nope - not enough.

I fully expect this team to go deep into the playoffs.
