This forum is boring, so I wanted to interject.

Sign and Trade for Josh Smith (16M) for Brandon Bass (6.75M) + Jordan Crawford (2.1M) + Terrance Williams (1M), Fab Melo (1.3M), or Courtney Lee (5.25M).

Renegotiate Paul Pierce's deal to two years for 24M.

Depends on how much Atlanta would want, only because they do not want to generate another powerhouse in the Eastern Conference.

After reading Smith's comments in a recent article, I think he would be willing to take less to come play with Rondo. He wants to play with Rondo, I think Ainge's pursuit during the trade deadline made this apparent.

New York is capped until 2015. Chicago is capped until 2014. Indiana has some space, even if they re-sign David West, but who the hell wants to go play in Indiana. Brooklyn is more/less roster-locked with the amount of money they are paying their starting five. Atlanta could make a huge splash in free agency, but I like our chances against any team they run out, with the exception of signing Chris Paul.

Basically, I think Ainge has one last push with KG and Paul before the new regime takes over. This would be a great way to send KG, Paul, and JET into the sunset, which would be the perfect ending for their great careers in "Green."

Crawford has got to go. His defense is absymal. His erratic jumpshooting makes me cring everytime he gets the rock. I personally think he is a cancer to this team.

Ainge and Doc like JET, and his leadership is an added bonus, especially with the older generation stars matriculating out of the league. Also, his tattoo proves that his initial and lasting mindset is to win a championship in Boston. Yes, keep him, even with ackowledging he has performed subpar this season, in relation to his career.  However, his playoff intangibles are worth the five million.

Bass and Crawford have to be traded. Someone will take them. I believe we could have been a legitimate threat for another title run this year, unfortuantely the injury bug plagued us. Let's prepare for the last year of KG, Paul, and JET in 2014. Wouldn't it be fitting to knock LeBron and Ray "Judas" Allen off in an Eastern Conference Finals, and send LeBron packing to Cleveland (which I think he will do). Next year is our best chance of winning a title before the next "Big Three" (presumably Melo, Howard, Paul) is formed.

I liked our chances of picking up Trey Burke before he exploded in the NCAA. Now, it seems as though we will end up with another D-League big man. This offseason is pivotal, as was the last one. I think Ainge will make the right moves...and it could start with a sign and trade for Josh Smith.

The Starting Five for the Celtics in 2013/2014:

1. Rondo/ FA or JET/ (PG Draft 2013)
2. Bradley/ Lee or JET/
3. Pierce/ Green
4. Josh Smith or David West/ Sullinger
5. Garnett/ FA / Jason Collins (Sign)

Why does Atlanta take back a bunch of medium length contracts in a sign and trade? They'd be better off letting Smith walk, and using their cap space on someone else.

Atlanta laughs and hangs up.

There's a better chance they resign Smith and sign Howard in the offseason than accept that trade.

Talent-wise, we're getting a steal.  Plus, Atlanta doesn't want anything to do with Bass' and Lee's contracts.

i think it would help the celtics but i agree wit the posts above me. the contract lengths may turn off atlanta, and im not sure they want 3 more guards. they have teague, harris, lou will when he comes back, they signed shelvin mack for 2 years i think, then ur gonna add c lee, t-will, and then crawfish.

i may be mistaken wit harris, teague and lou-will, cuz im not sure what their contracts are lookin like.

It was more of Bass, Crawford, and another player. They could cut Crawfish after next season and use Bass as a trade chip. Just getting something instead of nothing. Bass's contract is very tradeable, and he is a solid role player.

I got this itch behind my year that Josh Smith has his eyes set on becoming a celtic one way or the other. He is best friends with Rondo and even gave props for the celtic fans , for shaking the building. I mean what opposing player says that about other team fans??

Depending on what happens after this season and how far we go into the playoffs

1) KG retires or takes 1st half of next year.
2) Pierce is bought out bc i can't see anyone willing to have him in their payroll for 15 million. So sign and trade is not viable
3) With the payroll opened up now, Smith signs for 7 years at 15-16 million a year with atl and then gets traded to the celts. Celtics give up Melo, Bass, Lee + 2013 1st for Smith and both 2013 2nd round pick.  Celtics lineup

Starting - c: Sully pf: Smith sf: Green Sg: AB PG: Rondo

Bench - Terry, Crawford, Williams, and the rest

1) three bringback possibilities , JJJ, Jason Collins, Barbosa

2) 2013 2nd round picks where Atl will pick - Solomon Hill, Patric Young, Jackie Carmichael, Rodney Williams, James Southerland, Will Clyburn, Trevor Mbakwe

It will be docs small ball dream come to life. Smith will is an excellent rebounder + Sully at centre we have little to worry about interior presence. Green hopefully peaks, and is our go to guy like pierce is for us now. Rondo coming back , healthy and team oriented hopefully. Bench a little thin after the trade, hopefully danny can fill it up with decent players via FA and 2nd round picks.

We will make the playoffs and should be a top 4 team in the conference. Who knows from there

There is no way Atlanta considers this, they are far better off keeping their cap flexibility that they've worked so hard to create and take their chances in free agency. I think Atlanta has a solid advantage in terms of attracting talent and with enough cap room to pick up a couple stars I'd say they like their chances.

The only way the Celtics are going to be able to add Josh Smith/All-Star level talent through a trade without sending out KG or PP (or even Terry) is by packaging Sully, Bradley and picks to a team that isn't quite ready to compete and has a star that is wasting his talent on a team years away from being truly competitive.

Alternatively if Jeff Green could be a serious trade piece if he continues his play throughout the regular season and doesn't disappear in the playoffs. As many people on this board have pointed out he could be a steal if he continues to play at a high level on only a 9m contract. I could see a team like Atlanta being interested in taking on that type of contract to pair with another star and their current talent or a team like Sacramento willing to move DMC for lesser but more manageable talent before they have to spend big on a contract extension.

Too many people are trying to create trades where the Celtics are getting back quality value without giving up any of our own. Those types of trades are absolute steals and only come around once in a blue moon under extreme circumstances.

If we want to bring in a guy through a trade of any real value some combination of KG, PP, Rondo,  Green, Bradley and Sully are going to need to be heading out of Boston. If none of those guys are in a trade suggestion then its probably unrealistic.

Can't renegotiate Pierce contract as well.

There is nothing plausible about this idea.

Can't renegotiate Pierce. Not allowed in CBA. Not like the NFL.

Over the Tax threshold so we aren't allowed to acquire a player via S+T.

Only way I can see Smith being S+T here is if it's in a deal where more money goes out then comes in to the point that we are not over the tax. Even with this I am not sure it's allowed since originally we would be in the tax. Anyone know?

If the above was allowed it would almost certainly mean Pierce being traded out of Boston.

I just don't see the benefit for Atlanta.  Now if perhaps there was a third team involved like say Cleveland, something like this may be possible

Boston - Smith at 4 years, 80 million (or something like that)

Cleveland - Green

Atlanta - Varejao, Sullinger, Crawford, Melo

I think that is a more plausible trade and one that all 3 teams might do.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner
