Why does Atlanta take back a bunch of medium length contracts in a sign and trade? They'd be better off letting Smith walk, and using their cap space on someone else.

This is all you need to know about a deal like this. I wanted Smith this year. I want Smith as a sign and trade option... But I just dont see any possible way that we can get it done with the players we have. There really is no value for Atlanta taking back these medium length contract players.

i think it would help the celtics but i agree wit the posts above me. the contract lengths may turn off atlanta, and im not sure they want 3 more guards. they have teague, harris, lou will when he comes back, they signed shelvin mack for 2 years i think, then ur gonna add c lee, t-will, and then crawfish.

i may be mistaken wit harris, teague and lou-will, cuz im not sure what their contracts are lookin like.

Why red?

I just don't see the benefit for Atlanta.  Now if perhaps there was a third team involved like say Cleveland, something like this may be possible

Boston - Smith at 4 years, 80 million (or something like that)

Cleveland - Green

Atlanta - Varejao, Sullinger, Crawford, Melo

I think that is a more plausible trade and one that all 3 teams might do.
4 years 80 million??? Please god no! Moving Green and Sully (not to mention Crawford and Melo) to pay Smith 20m a year? Green makes 9m and isn't that far behind Smith in terms of overall talent. I know you said something like that, but I'm only in on Smith if its for about 5m less a season (so 4 years 60m and would be willing to extend the deal for significantly longer, 6-7 years at around that 15m number).

He would have to be taking a significant cut from his market value, but his market value is going to be extremely inflated by desperate teams. But he might be inclined to do that if he gets to play with Rondo on a solid team (plus it sets a good precedent for when Rondo comes off of his team friendly deal).

If we are moving Green and Sully I want huge value in return, as in not what Smith would be making if we were highest bidder in FA.

Hopefully he re-signs with atlanta or some other desperate team overpays him. That way he'll never see himself in Celtic Green because I for one HOPE that he NEVER lands in Celtic Green. He is definitely in my top 5 of most overrated players playing today.  Also, anyone who would even fix their fingers to type out the words in any kind of imaginary deal to give away Jeff Green for him my question is...do you live in Colorado? If so, it would make sense why you would propose such nonsense.

I meant 5 years not 4 years.  Sorry for the confusion.

If that the case, I would rather do Green for sideshow.

And keep Sully.

I believe S&T contracts can only be for 4 years max.  Maybe 4 years $64m gets it done.

Unfortunately, the Celtics have approximately $77.5m in committed salary for next season (including their 3 non-guaranteed contracts and their 1st round pick).  The tax apron will likey be right around that amount.  I don't think a S&T is an option for the C's unless they can find a way to send out more money than comes back.  They'd likey need to dump Terry in a separate deal 1st, and not take on any salary in the move.

Not mention, there is no way the Celtics (or any team) should be giving Smith the max.

I don't think the Celtics are doing a S&T for any big-contract player unless the deal includes the team's 2014 first-round pick and another first round pick,.

I would love for us to get Josh Smith. I hope we can package Bass/Lee and Terry through a 3 way trade to free up some space for a serviceable big, or a big with potential. Then sign Josh Smith, once KG/PP retire which seems like it'll happen.
