Ainge really Whiffed on K-mart

Perhaps someone already mentioned this, but in Danny's eyes, what is more important?

- A short-term add of a solid seasoned big man, aka Martin, to a good team that doesn't have a realistic shot at the title.

or

- Bringing in a young prospect that Danny has been tracking to evaluate for the future.

Obviously, given the Crawford trade and 3 CBA signings, the latter is more important to Danny. I am sure Doc and players wanted Martin. I am sure most fans and CB'rs wanted Martin to.

I bring this up on most every Cs thread which references Martin, the trade deadline, the CBA'rs, or what's going to happen this summer. This year is different.

Without Rondo, the Cs won't finish the season 1 game away from the finals nor the Championship itself. Danny knows this and he knows that Rondo won't be 100% next season either, ergo no title run next season.

I expect big changes this off-season. Perhaps not a full gutting of the roster. However, at the very least, Danny will start the process of rebuilding the Cs into a contender. The moves will probably be a little odd/shocking and things we wouldn't expect. Kind of like Danny's trade of Antoine Walker to Dallas for Raef & Tony Delk.

Sry for the rant. I REALLY have to cut down on the coffee.

I am starting to think given our injuries that it would be best to slip out of the playoff race and get some help in the lottery.  Probably would not be picking high but what good is losing in the first round?   It's looking more and more like we will play MIA if we keep losing.   While I think we will take them to the limit, I just don't see Stern letting us beat his well marketed team and I think the refs would have a field day.

We have close to zero chance, unfortunately, of falling out of the playoffs in the East.

Our next nearest competitor is Philly, 9 games behind us.

On the plus side, I'd rather play the cHeat with our legs fresh (or should I say, as fresh as they can be)in the first round.

....also, Danny didn't whiff on KMart, he never got in the batter's box.

Too bad, KMart and Birdman could have made a difference. I know people are being sarcastic about them "being the difference", but their biggest contribution would've been to give KG more rest with more effective play behind them.
Doc would've played them because they are vets.

I'm a Danny supporter, but two BIG mistakes by Ainge.

I don't understand what you are saying. You state that Ainge did the right thing by not signing KMart/Birdman and then state it was right "for the future of the team." Exactly what  "future" are you referring to? Because to me, the future is now. It's either win or go home.

AND, I've never once understood these myths about players being "malcontents." If these guys are such malcontents, then how come other teams were willing to sign them.

Are the Celtics the only NBA team that has a "happy go-lucky" locker room? (even though they've lost 5 games in a row)

All three recently signed free agents are on non-guaranteed deals for next season, making them very useful throw-ins for potential trades to match salaries. In addition, obtaining, and playing Crawford a lot of minutes, along with giving Bradley and Lee more time to see what they can really do when the load is on their shoulders, let's us develop players and see what we really have in these guys so we can make the right moves this summer.

I really get the "win now desire", but it's painfully clear with the Rondo, Sullinger, and KG injuries, that this is not our year, not even close.

I'm interested to see what happened with K Mart and Birdman, because I feel like eventually it'll come out that there was a personal issue (much like Blatche and KG).

I just think, particularly with Birdman, that they fit such a glaring hole that there has to be something else to it.

I'd rather you add two guys who are clearly able to contribute so I can better enjoy what could be the last year Pierce and Garnett will play together.

If you're committed to keeping Garnett, Pierce and Terry on the team together I think you owe it to them to bring in these veterans if your other option is bringing in 2 younger guys who have a 1% chance of turning into real assets.

I don't think you need to show them blind loyalty, but certainly some.

No one thinks they will become players worthy for minutes, or even worthy of staying in the league. They are players who can be added to trades this summer to make salaries work and save the other team some cash after they cut them and dump their non-guaranteed deals.

I don't think Ainge is in any way committed to keeping these guys together, he tried to trade them at the deadline, but the deals were just not good enough (and KG probably killed the Clippers trade). Ainge is doing what he should, he's preparing for next year and beyond. Bringing in some washed up vets who have issues with a number of players in the league wasn't going to help us win this year or in the future.

Once Rondo went down, I think it was a reasonable strategy to view this as a bit of a lost season and to take steps to maximize the team's ability to contend next season, even if it meant decrease the team's ability to compete this season.  Sullinger being out for the season probably cemented that.

Right now, I see the team going with a big man rotation of Garnett, Bass, Sullinger, and a free agent pick-up next season.  White, Randolph, and Wilcox should be auditioning for a possible role as the fifth big.  I want to explore White and Randolph over Wilcox because I prefer bigs who are capable of contributing on offense away from the basket.

I can't see Martin or Andersen as someone who you would want to sign through next season, nor do I think they would be willing to do so.

The Celtics need to be taking a few risks in hopes of finding a player who can make a surprising contribution.  I think he should be looking for players who were wrongly overlooked by NBA teams or misused in previous NBA stints or players who have obvious talent but who had maturity/mental problems that may have been solved by gaining perspective while playing overseas.
