I love how Kobe Bryant's ankle sprain has got significantly more national TV attention than several other players' ACL injuries put together.

Kobe should stop whining like moron and get over it. Plenty of players sprain their ankles in the NBA buddy. No need to cry about it on twitter.

Dahntey Jones has skyrocketed up my list of favorite players. That's all I have to say.
Comments like this make me sick.  Regardless of what color jersey they wear, they are human beings.  Wishing ill on another is abhorrent to me.

I fully stand by my comment. Dahntey Jones is correct in his comments that the video clearly shows Kobe kicking his leg out on the jump shot to keep away the defender. He always gets away with this, especially on game winning shots, I'm glad Jones not only anticipated that and forced himself into Kobe to contest the shot, but called him on it afterwards when Kobe complained.

I don't wish anyone injuries. I do however love any player that sticks up for themselves and calls players like Kobe on these garbage illegal moves they get away with.

I do enjoy how Kobe 'accidentally' elbows about 20 people in the face with serious force over his career and then whinges when he turns his ankle on someone's foot. It truly is the mark of a self-centred, egotistical nincompoop.

So his ankle was so SEVERELY sprained that he got up, WALKED unassisted to the bench, argued the call & then WALKED unassisted to the dressing room......OH THE DRAMA.....any bets on him PLAYING tomorrow?

Haha this was what I found the funniest. Headlines all over ESPN about Kobe's severely sprained ankle... I was like oh boy tough break for the Lakers... Then I watched the Jones play and saw Kobe up running around yelling at the officials... And I was like wait a second here... Somethings fishy.

LOL that's why i don't give a rat's butt abt this "whole NBA should be protecting the players thing" this happens a lot... Barbs got clotheslined which is dangerous.. but we don't hear that being sensationalized everywhere or Barbs complaining in the media...

Ha that was a "personal foul".

If that happened to Lebron there would need to be riot police in the stadium. No but seriously can younimagine under any circumstance this not being a flagrant if it were on Lebron and possibly flagrant 2?

Half of it was that barbosa didn't get up and start shoving and going crazy like most nba players do. Its all about the reaction.

Did anyone see the ny blazers game last nighht? JJ Hickson got hit HARD at least twice. Once by Kenyon once by JR. Couldnt believe they didn't mention them on the broadcast. One was martin blatantly swinging down on Hicksons chest a la KG on hansborough and one was Jr 2 harms hard on hicksons head preventing layup.

Hickson kept his cool and went to the line. All he had to do was flip out and it would have been made a bigger deal.

I’ve watched that Kobe/Jones play a dozen times, and Jones plays about the best defense you can on a shot like that – stays close to Kobe, cuts off baseline penetration, barely leaves his feet, yet contests the shot, etc. Kobe missed the shot and landed awkwardly. That is all. Even if Jones’ foot was involved, it was completely accidental and not a “dangerous play” on Jones’ part.  I'm someone who has torn an ankle ligament landing on a defender's foot after a jump shot.  I know the difference between accidental and intentional.

Nothing Jones does shows intent to injure Kobe.  It was a split-second play.  Jones isn't looking at the ground or Kobe's feet, trying to position his feet under him.  As soon as Jones contests the shot, he turns to watch it.  His back is to Kobe as Kobe comes down.

There is no intent there.  This isn't a Bruce Bowen or Ron Artest move - both of whom used to look at the defenders feet and position their feet directly in their landing zone.  That's dirty.

Nothing Jones does is dirty.  Watch the play again.  Watch it in slow-mo.  You'll eventually see it for what it is - Kobe simply lands awkwardly as the result of an awkward shot.

Kobe is pathetic for whining after the game that Jones’ defense was a “dangerous play” (it wasn’t) and that you’re not supposed to get that close to shooters (you have to unless you want them to score 50 points). I’m sure Kobe would have preferred that Jones back up, bow, and allow Kobe to shoot from whichever position he deemed satisfactory.  Kobe loves to whine, and loves to stare down officials every time he doesn't get a call.  He's a brat.  He's so used to getting everything he wants because he's Kobe Bryant.

The most ridiculous part of this story is that it has become a story at all. I heard Kenny Smith (who I believe is a massive idiot) agreeing with Kobe on NBA TV, going as far as calling Jones a dirty player, before quickly retracting that statement. Then, I switched over to ESPN, where the anchors were dissecting the video as if it were the Zapruder film. They, of course, couldn’t make up their minds, but decided nonetheless that Kobe must be right, because, you know, he’s Kobe. Then, I wake up this morning to the radio discussing Kobe’s comments, and I live in NYC (not LA).

I’m sure if Davide Stern could, he would reschedule the final five seconds of last night’s game, award Kobe foul shots (you know, since he missed the jumper), and toss Jones from the game for playing defense.  Heck, he already had the officials come out and say they missed the call and poor Kobe should have been gifted free throws.  Officials admit mistakes once in a blue moon (and blow about fifty calls per night across the league), so why admit they were wrong on this one?

It's all because it's Kobe Bryant and he whined after the game, and then later on Twitter, and then his wife posted a photo to Instagram.........

Don’t worry, Kobe. I’m sure you’ll never miss another game-tying/game-winning jumper without being awarded free throws. That’s only fair because you’re Kobe, right?

What a freakin’ joke this league is becoming.  Let the superstars whine, whine, whine.  I'm going to tune out on this league eventually.  I'm getting tired of this crap.  Kobe's ego makes me sick.  Wow, you sprained your ankle on your 33rd shot of the game.  Get over it.

Another thing: If this were Rudy Gay or Evan Turner or LaMarcus Aldridge - all stars in their own right, but nowhere near the superstar level of Kobe or Durant or LeBron - taking this shot and hurting their ankle there wouldn't even be a story here.  And, if it were Jones shooting it over Kobe and injuring his ankle, no media member would care one bit.

In my opinion, it's more dangerous having the photographers stationed right under the basket.  Players trip over them all the time.

p.s. This happens on the same night as Sebastian Telfair getting tossed from a game for getting massively frustrated by Avery Bradley’s fantastic pressure defense. See, defense is a part of basketball.

ZOMG guys Kobe is a game-time decision for tonight!  Will he make it?!?!?  It would be the greatest comeback story since the last time Kobe exaggerated an injury for attention!

Love Pierce's take on it basically saying it happens all the time and because its Kobe we are talking about it. If it wasn't him we wouldn't be.

Basically nailing it on the head there. We probably wouldn't be talking about it also cause whoever missed wouldn't be ranting to the media and twitter after.

I don't know who's being the bigger drama queen in this situation.  Kobe or ESPN.

Undercutting a player is bush league bad. But players land on the ankles of others and get sprains all the time. Its pretty impossible to tell whether a player is putting their foot there especially for a player to land on and injure themselves.

Its also got to be pretty hard to try to ball basketball and defense properly and suddenly start thinking about where to put your foot hoping the opposing shooter lands on it. That type of reaction has to be almost instantaneous and perfectly executed.

The earlier video of someone tripping Kobe is a bad foul. I don't count that. But the play where Kobe got hurt, Jones wasn't even looking at Kobe to see where he would land as to where to be positioned. He contested the shot and looked toward the basket to see if the ball went in.

Kobe is a drama queen. Plain and simple.

Last second possesion up by 2 I find it hard to believe that Jones would intentionally try and stick his feet under.

Its almost the equivalent to someone in the bottom of the 9th throwing at someone's head on a pitch that gets away with bases loaded.

It's Kobe.  At least ESPN has a major financial interest in creating drama.

I knew he would be gametime decision and possibly play tonight.
If he does play watch the media make this a Hollywood story for the ages on how Kobe came back from a severe ankle sprain.

I promise I've never seen a team where it's just so much soap opera drama like the Lakers. Every week has been an episode of "As the Lakers Turn" with ESPN following it in the media.

Also watching the video over and over again and in slow motion, I didn't see a dirty play like what Jalen Rose did to him or what Bruce Bowen used to do. If I did see it, I would've agreed with Kobe and said Dahntay was being dirty.

EXACTLY.

Beyond just this, he was shooting a wild fade away.  If he was shooting a normal jumper this would be clear cut, but when a player is drifting through the air any which way, how is someone supposed to play defense but follow him where he fades away?

So, according to ESPN, Kobe's a gametime decision tonight vs Indy.

Can someone with more medical knowledge than I explain how THAT is possible? (Him possibly playing tonight)?
