Fair enough, but I could still see it happening and certainly on the break, where I don't recall Hawes ever really doing the either.

if it was baseball, it would be easier to platoon him and Melo for offense/defense

but I think we could do worse at that spot in the draft

considering the C's look to be picking anywhere from 16-22 in this draft, if they can grab a center with some offensive skills that may be able to come off the bench and provide some scoring next year, that's not too bad considering this isn't considered a great draft.

Trying to find another comparison because I just think he's more aggressive and less ridgid than Hawes.

Im just a pup so I never got to see him play, but does anyone detect a hint of Sam Bowie? Runs hard, cuts hard, rudimentary yet effective post moves.  I guess he'll never be the athlete or defender Bowie was, but the documentary on Bowie reminded me of what I've seen from Olynyk.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I've watched him a little and I can tell you he's more athletic than Hawes every day of the week. Watching him play and run you almost don't believe he's 7'0".

He can't jump, that concerns me.

I haven't seen this kid play but if he was anywhere near as good as Sam Bowie, he'd the hands-down #1 pick.

for that matter, if he was Bowie-Light, he'd still be in the top 2-3 picks this year.  Bowie was a very skilled kid when he was healthy.

Ya definitely an interesting cat, the documentary "Going Big" is on Netflix and is an excellent look into the man's life.

Your right the comp probably doesn't hold to much water. Olynyk isn't near the athlete the athlete that Bowie was just trying to get a hold on the enigma that is Kelly Olynyk.

Not sure if most people here are aware but he's Canadian. The Steve Nash era has done wonders for the Canadien basketball scene and players like Andrew Wiggin, Tristan Thompson,  Myck Kabongo,  Andrew Nicholsom, Kris and Corey Joseph are primed to take the country to new heights on the international scene.

To me its encouraging to see a player like Olynyk come out no where when the Canadien basketball scene is emerging as one of the world's best. He may be being slept upon and I wouldn't doubt that wherever he's drafted will look like a steal years down the road.

I like him, I thought he was active on defense but just not always in the right place, which to me means that the Celtics could turn him into a serviceable defender.

As far as rebounding his HS coach should be fired. Watching Olynyk boxing out consists of him lining up his man and then running at him and hitting him with his shoulder. To me this is strictly a rebounding mechanics issue, and one that can be overcome.

On offense he's great at sealing defenders and sets solid screens to free his teammates. Good touch around the basket. Solid full length court running speed but average quickness. Saying he's not athletic ignores the fact that he will be able to beat his man down the floor due to effort.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I'd take Spencer Hawes as a backup center any day.

He's a 7 footer who can score.  Defense will probably never be his strong point, but that's not what we will use him for.  I like, reminds me of a poor mans' gasol or a poor mans' bosh offensively.  The key is to coach him up to be serviceable on defense.

Athleticism is not top notch, but he has good mobility for his size and should match up well with most power forwards.  And the NBA has gone away from 'true centers' anyways so this day's NBA is actually suitable for a guy like Olynyk to play the 5.

The thing is with a run and gun point like Rondo, Olynyk will score a LOT of easy baskets.  And the nice thing is that he can create his own offense on the floor as long as he gets it anywhere near the post.  A lot of big men in the NBA can't do that.

My guess would be Oh-ley-nik or Oh-lee-nik, if he's retained anything close to the original pronunciation (the name is Ukranian).

If he's a 7 footer he doesn't need to do much jumping
