If anything, this type of deal would have been the thing to do in the recent past. I think it's getting to late for it now -- there's really no point to adding mid-level pieces and salaries for Rondo if the team then presumably wouldn't have KG and / or Paul, or at least still have them at championship form, and that clock is ticking in a big way.
Dragic, Green, Gortat, Lee, Bradley et al is a lottery team with little to no cap space. If you're going to trade Rondo, get a true building block, or clear room and get rookie contracts and picks.
By no means would this be my first choice in terms of a trade for Rondo, I'd rather get a better building block straight out of the gate, but this is a solid haul.
Add Dragic and Gortat to our current roster with a healthy Sully coming back and I'd say we would be considered 2nd best in the East. By bringing in Dragic who is a true PG to run the first team offense we'd be flush with guards and could try to move Terry or Lee for a pick or more likely some younger/cheap depth. Plus whoever we choose with our very high lottery pick this season and our middle of the round choice. And we swap Bass's bloated contract for a younger similar version in Marcus Morris on a rookie contract.
We could make a serious last ditch run at another Championship with PP and KG.
The next season Gortat, Pierce and KG come off the books and you still have Dragic, Green, Sully (possibly Lee) resign Bradley, our two 2013 draft picks and over 35million in cap space to go after free agents in one of the best summer classes ever. I'd say that has a chance to put us back to being competitive rather quickly.
No situation is ideal, most rebuilding efforts fail, but the ideal scenario for me would be to be able to make one last ditch run next year with our current squad and still acquire a few young assets/picks to make rebuilding a little more fun to watch.
