Along with contributing offensively at a consistent and efficient level, his defense has been truly stellar, beyond my wildest dreams.  I had just hoped that he would in time become an average defender and not get lost or fail to complete his responsibilities in the team defense too often.  More than being average, his defense has been All-NBA caliber against perimeter players of all sizes, including defending Curry extremely well a few games ago.  I really like watching this version of Green play.

Agreed. I knew his defense was improving, but I was pretty surprised when I found out he was 18th in the league in opponent points per possession.

And according to Synergy, the Celtics have four of the top 20 defenders in the NBA this season:

SULLINGER!?

Wow that stat is pretty impressive.
And yeah Sully had the best plus minus before he left for his back surgery. So I wouldn't be surprised if he was there.

That surprises you?  Sully's defense was in absolute beast mode towards the last month or so before he got hurt.  He really uses his weight well to get opposing players off their spots, and he heavilly contests every single shot that goes up.

If you watch his play towards the end of the season, points scored against him were few and far between.

This kid is going to be something special if he recovers well from the surgery.

A few of the guys on that list come as a real suprise to me:

9 - Stephen Jackson
13 - Kyle Lowry
15 - Blake Griffin

I always saw those guys as scorers, never really saw them as defensive players.

Big shout out to my man Marquis!  He always did a great job for us defensively, and even to this day I still believe we really miss his presence sometimes.

At the start of the season and in the preseason he wasn't even able to stay on the floor due to his defense.

I am very well aware of and impressed by his improvement but did not realize he was top of the league good... :o

And Lowry was always a good defender I think. Jackson and Griffin are surprising to me(although being on the Spurs could be what's helping Jackson).

without a doubt.

I really like bass especially because I am an LSU guy but even i can see we need an upgrade at his spot. I want the best for the celtics first and foremost.
LET'S GO CELTICS!

Earlier this year the team was about 18 ppp better on defense when KG was on the floor. That number dropped to 8-9 in Dec/Jan and Sully was a big part of that. The team stopped falling apart when KG was out, even with those Bass/Sully lineups.

The list goes through AV at .761, Pierce and Rondo are at .77, not far off.

I'm also surprised that Hansborough ranks as high as he does.

Green's defensive improvement isn't a surprise.

Been saying since the trade he has the foot quickness to be an excellent defender.

And he came from a team in Oklahoma City that doesn't put the same emphasis on defense that the Celtics do.

It was just a matter of time ...

I just don't trust synergy numbers for individual defense.

Ray Allen having better numbers than Durant/LBJ last year when I looked at everything except post ups. This set off severe alarm bells in my head about teammate interactions still weighing heavily on them.
