Was checking Shamsports and it says Dionte Christmas has 50% guaranteed minimum salary ( 236,802 $) with no guarantee date.
Kris Joseph is fully unguaranteed, so it doesnt make sense to waive someone who makes over 200 k and keep another player making the double ( even if he is fully non guaranteed and with no guarantee date set). Don't know how this is possible with the CBA, this sucks for players to go through this.

Jamar Smith is guaranteed 25 k, don't see the need to add his salary against the cap.

If anyone here that is more of an expert regarding vet minimum contracts,2nd rounders and if they count against the apron 74.3 million ?

Yeah, I saw that yesterday too.  Strictly from a positional perspective, we have greater need for a backup 3 than a backup 2, but Christmas seemed like the better player between he and Joseph.  Maybe the C's feel that Christmas could play spot minutes at the 3.  He is, 6'5, 205 after all.  Two of Smith, Joseph, Christmas will have to go.  I agree with your prediction.  I think they keep Christmas over Joseph, and Smith is gone too.

I think it will be an open competition with Joseph and Christmas in training camp.  But you are right that Christmas may have a slight advantage because of his contract.

This training camp is going to be really interesting on many levels.  Between the battle for the last spot, the development of young guys, and the battle for rotation minutes for big men, I am very excited.

Cutting Kris Joseph might be a big mistake. He's 2 inches taller than Xmass and XLee, and outweighs them by 12-17 pounds. He also has a much longer wingspan, 6'11" or more I believe.

It'd be pretty silly to lose to the Heat if Pierce or Green get hobbled, because Lebron was being guarded by some 6'5" guard for meaningful minutes.

Christmas could get cut while still being the better player than Joseph. We also shouldn't overrate the summer league performances of shooting 2 guards. Let's see what they show in training camp.

Going into the season with only 2 small forwards including Pierce is insane. Calling a 6'5" 200-205 pound guard like Christmas or Lee a capable SF is equally insane.

Joseph has a lot going for him just because of the way Danny shaped the roster.

I could almost see Dooling or Collins or Darko getting cut if Christmas or Melo shines well enough.

Joseph would have to play poorly and tentatively to get cut, unless an equally bit and athletic SF can be brought in to at least guard the SF position.

Maybe Joseph gets cut and a trade for a real SF is made before the deadline?

If Pierce or Green get hurt against the Heat, I don't think Joseph will do much to save us.

My vote is to keep Christmas. For one, he has more experience. I also just liked the way he played in summer league.

I think Danny is making this a "winner take all" Competition in training camp. Signing Darko means that Smith, Xmas and Joseph are all vying for the last spot.

I'm not sure that Joseph has any better shot at making it just based on his position. We have an aging SF and a recently injured back SF but remember we have a SG coming off of 2 shoulder surgeries too. To all of the posts saying that 200K of 25K will make a difference at the end of the day, put in perspective that it's 3/10 of 1% of the total Celtics salary this season. It would only be decisive if there were no other factors of difference, which there clearly are.

Another thing to consider is that maybe none of those guys get signed. We have 2M in space after signing Darko for the minimum and 2M + an extra roster spot is nice to have for flexibility mid-season.

Also if anyone could give some clarity on how the D-League contracts work. I think to have rights to a player during the season they have to be listed on the 15 man Celtic roster otherwise they're free to sign with other teams regardless of their playing for the Red Claws or not.

Writing is on the wall 50/50 chance Joseph remains a Celtic. My gut tells me Celtics go with experienced rookie Christmas. Trade Joseph to one of younger teams in the league. Danny is ruthless GM, but a kind person. He will find Joseph another home.

Joseph is Canadian, so trade him to the Raptors for their 2nd next year.

I noticed that too.

For once I think we have an invite capable of passing a 2nd rounder, but not for that reason.  Rather, a lot of teams typically prefer to take flyers on summer league standouts rather than post-50 picks that were passed on by their drafting team.  With the new rules, we'd probably be more likely to get away with stashing Joseph in Maine and possibly having our cake and eating it too.

More likely neither reason will play into it and whoever deserves it will get it.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Raptors roster looks full. Raptors have a plethora of wing players they committed long term to. He won't get a fair shot. Hornets would be a nice situation for him. Upstart team he can find some minutes on the court.

It's a little bit confusing, but from what I can tell:

* If fully guaranteed, a rookie deal counts at least $854k against the apron, even if they actually make less than that; and

* If partially guaranteed, only the guaranteed amount counts against the apron.

Could be a positional thing.  We have no need for another guard.  Rondo/Lee/JET will get the minutes, then Bradley comes back, and we have Dooling to keep sharp.  Why bother with a guard.

Let's not get too excited about Xmas until he looks good against NBA defense.  We wont' see that in a Celtic uniform this season either way.

If Joseph turns out to be not good enough for the NBA, it makes no difference what position he plays.

Ray Allen has played a lot of minutes at the 3 since he came to Boston. We can manage with a 6'5" SF for limited minutes. If Dionte is the same size and actually ready to play in the NBA, I'm fine with that.
