Interesting. I am a Simmons fan. Would love to see him go H2H with Broussard since he is an avid Heat Lover and Celtic's Hater. Obviously we know Simmons loves his Celts.

Quote
Simmons, who wrote the best-selling, “Book of Basketball,” would add punch to a show that is routinely compared to TNT’s considerably more popular and successful Inside the NBA. ESPN has been searching for the right combination on Countdown for years – it used to be called NBA Shootaround – and the network believes Simmons is the missing piece.

The less Broussard, the better.

They need Chris Webber. Lots of Webber.

Yeah Webber is good. What happened with Webber? Seems like we are getting less and less of him.

The quality of ESPN's NBA coverage is pretty inferior to what TNT is trotting out.  Anything would probably help them out at this point.

I predict Simmons will say something over the line that will lead to his dismissal (from the show, not the network).

A guy who's used to working a little bit blue but having editors to rein him in being pressured to come up with attention-grabbing statements on the fly - I think he'll have trouble filtering things to the extent ESPN would like.

Has nobody ever seen him on TV?  The guy is awkward as hell.  Maybe he will grow into it, but he is made for podcasts.

Obviously getting rid of Broussard is a must but I am not sure I want to listen to Simmons squeaky ass voice acting like he is so plugged into the NBA game and its players.

You know who would be great at that is Doc Rivers. Its too bad he's already got a good high paying gig.  ;D

Is there not a former player or coach they could add?

SVG is one guy that immediately comes to mind.

SVG would be great for it, which is why it will never happen.

EJ is incredibly good at what he does. The camaraderie also feels genuine on TNT and the gimmicks work. Kenny Smith is great at communicating his points and Barkley has always been entertaining, whether intentional or unintentional.

I think TNT must have some pretty good writers helping them come up with bits to do on the show. Remember the Kenny Smith car jumping commercial attempt? That was genius. If the ESPN guys tried that, it would feel forced.

TNT managed to create something special with the right combination of talent. I don't think it can be easily duplicated. Jon Barry can be entertaining, but he doesn't have the resume of Barkley or Smith to be taken as seriously. Smith, Barkley and EJ also seem to be incredibly comfortable with one another, to the point where they can make fun of each other -- even about stuff that can hurt like legacy, a lack of championships, or weight.

The Lakers/Celtics friction between Magic and Simmons could make for great television.

I think they should just try to find a contrarian, sort of like a smarter Woody Paige, whose job is to outrageously disagree with mainstream opinion and cause as much conflict as possible.

Sadly you just described Steven A Smith and Skip Bayless. Thank god they both have their own show.

Magic and Broussard both need to go. They are atrocious. Wilbon is ok not great but better then what they've had. I like Barry cause he is honest and says it like it is. Webber and Payton would be an amazing addition to Barry and wilbon. I enjoy Simmons as a writer and poscastrt but I'm not sure if he'd be fit for the big screen.

I wish it was a trio of wilbon Barry and webber with either Payton ot Steven A as the fourth... I guess it doesn't matter cause I'll just watch the TNT guys instead.
