Yesterday I believe i suffered a ocualr migraine. Its where your vision can get very blurry and almost greyed out and you sometimes see different colors. Freaked me out pretty bad cause I was at work but wondering if this has happened to anyone here before.

Every time I get a migraine I get tunnel vision, and the things I can see are less distinguishable. If you're at work and need to stay going I'd pound some caffeine and take asprin. Their is medicine for it that helps. Their is one other remedy but it is not for everyone and not something that can be done at work.

I've suffered from chronic hemiplegic migraines my entire life, (the bane of my existence) ... visual disturbences are normal, and I've actually gone blind twice, and have tunnel vision and light flashes normally.

The biggest problem with my particularly rare form of migraine is that they stay in the vasoconstrictive stage, (which is what causes the hemiplegia), so I can't take any SSRI's or other types of vasoconstrictors, only opiate pain medications, which come with their own set of problems.

Hang in there and see a good neurologist ... they can be managed with many prophylactic medications, such as beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, antidepresants, etc. Hope it gets better for you ... it's a level and type of pain that is unlike most others.

My feelings go out to you brother.  My mom has suffered from chronic migraines all her life and I understand how debilitating they can be.  Not sure if hers are hemiplegic but they do cause motor problems to the point she doesn't leave bed.  My sympathies man.

I'm pretty sure any headache can cause eye problems, and eye problems can cause headaches so if you're worried get it checked out, it could just be nothing.

Its not strange that an ocular migraine wasn't followed by a headache, they usually aren't, tha'ts what makes it an ocular migraine vs a migraine. I have patients who get them and I personally get them about twice a month. They are often set off by drinking red wine, Ale, anything in the nightshade group but quite often just by a bright light. Truly nothing to worry about and no need for meds either if you aren't getting a headache too.

Yeah, both times I lost my sight I had no pain, (which completely freaked me the first time, as I was only ten), and many times with other visual stuff, sans pain. Similar has happened to my Mom and brother as well. It's not as common, but also not that unusual ... really glad you didn't get the pain.

Thanks, Bro ... sorry your mom gets them. Mine are usually caused by rapid changes in barometric pressure, (especially high to low, clear days to rainy), though I get them a great deal in my sleep and wake with them full-blown and beyond the point where I can take anything. Not life-threatening, but they have made for a lot of missed/messed up opportunities in life, and are mainly just a nuisance.

  • It's all about the TEAM!
I have anywhere from about 6 - 30 migraines a year (They vary and I don't know why). I've had them since I was 12. The severity of the degree of pain goes from not too bad, to I can run down the street in circles in excruciating pain. Typically its a 2 day event for me. The actual migraine and the day after.

The migraine starts for me as a slight dot of vision loss of looking like something is not all there. This dot grows and becomes a blind spot of spinning colors that cover my eyes. Where the colors are, I cannot see through them. At my peak I'm about 70% blind. I can see enough to walk from room to room (with care) but never drive a car or anything like that. The blindness lasts about 30-60 minutes and slowly my sight returns. As my sight returns the pain begins. Often accompanied by crawling and numb skin on my face and hands. Sometimes they last a few hours, sometimes all day.

The next day I have a car wrecked feeling where I feel brain damaged and like I've had a stroke. Often this is worse than the migraine. I feel stupid and very sick. Even though I can function.

I've had various degrees of dealing with them. The longest I've went without a migraine is 15 months. Still other times I've had 20 in one month.

Nothing has ever worked for ridding me of them but a prescription called Nortriptyline has typically reduced the frequency and severity of my migraines. There are times I can go 4 and 5 months without one.

Also being in good shape and eating well and exercising and sleeping and being less stressed overall has also reduced the impact.

Although its a blessing you don't experience the pain, I know full well the blindness could be the worst part. I don't experience pain while I'm blinded. But nothing is more nauseating or unsettling than losing your sight. Sometimes that is the worst experience of the whole thing for me.

Good luck.

I had an ocular migraine last year.  Saw little lightening flashes in a circle around anything I looked at, and just shooting in a circle when my eyes were closed....no pain, though.  It scared me because I years ago I had a head injury and they warned me to watch out for signs of  seizures or stroke, and I didn't know what this was.  My doctor sent me to an optometrist who said it was an ocular migraine, and his wife suffered from them too.  I have had regular migraines...debilitating.  At least these had no pain...

I've had doctors scare me about it and say that we are great candidates for stroke or you can experience the blindness and never return to normal sight for the rest of your life. I took it seriously. I've lost 40lbs and I work out a lot. I'm 45 and I'm feeling a lot better and its happening less. So I do believe its a sign to take better care of yourself.

One of God's  greatest gift to mankind...chocolate...always set my migraines off.  I  think I have finally outgrown the migraine stage now though.  (Knock on wood, chocolate doesn't seem to bring them on anymore!)

Well I was young and athletic when I got them as a teenager. I played football and ran track. I was in great shape. I'm not saying being in great shape won't make it happen. But if you let yourself go, it'll probably get worse. I'm just taking it as a sign to take good care of yourself so it doesn't get worse. The better care I take of myself, the less it happens.
