We keep talking about keeping the BAE available for mid-season pickups, but is it THAT important? We've picked up a lot of guys mid-season, but the only one who was really worth a [dang] was PJ Brown. Is it worth *not* picking up someone today, so that we'll have a better chance of signing next year's version of Ryan Hollins in March?
And for the kinds of solid veterans we'd be targeting, is there that much difference between a *pro-rated* share of the vet min versus a prorated share of the BAE? If you're picking up a guy for a quarter of the season, it's probably a difference of $150K or $200k; real money to be sure, but these guys are asking for buyouts because they want to play for winning teams, not necessarily to maximize every last dollar they have coming to them (otherwise, they'd just stick to their original contracts and not take a discount to be bought out early).
