Cap restraints made it unlikely that Celtics could retain Stiemsma if modest outside offer came. Last Steamboat whistle has likely sounded.

How does this work if the offer is not much more then the BAE could we still offer that and if he chooses so he can still sign w/ us? with how awful the centers are that are out there would like to keep him

So now that we have Lee we are offering him the BAE, best we can do.

Question is how much playing time he would get as well. Would have to outplay Sullinger and Wilcox for minutes.

Perhaps not.  What if Danny and Green are holding off on signing his contract because the final number will be 9mil minus the Steimsma offer sheet?  Maybe Danny was using his good relationship with Green as a smokescreen to get someone to offer Steimsma a contract just over what they think we could match using the 9mil as a figure on which to base their offer.

It would be pretty clever, but after getting Lee for a bunch of scraps I'm not putting anything past Ainge.

I'd like to see what Steamer could do with two healthy feet and the ability to practice with the team throughout the season.  If the Minny offer isn't more than $1m per year more than Boston's, I think Steamer is staying.

I have a feeling that Minny is giving him 3/$10m, an offer he can't refuse.

Doesn't work that way.  What we pay Green has no affect on how much we can pay Stiemsma.

We don't have Bird-Rights for Stiemsma.  This means we can sign him in one of four ways.  Use available cap space (we have none), the full MLE (already used on Terry), the BAE (1.9m-still available), or sign him to his QO (1.05m).

Stiemsma is likely being offered more than 1.9m, so unless he just prefers to play here, he's gone.

The only way Steamer stays is if he doesn't want to sign a multi-year deal, but instead prove himself for one more year to get a bigger payday next offseason.  If he does, we'd have early Bird rights to him, which would increase his market value substantially.  If DA offers him $1.9 mil for one year, and someone offers him $5 mil for two, maybe he stays.  Even so I doubt it, but that's about the only situation that would make sense.  (Yes, I get the "he liked it here factor", which may or may not be true, but he was in the D-league fighting to get to the NBA for a few years.  He'd be wise to take the payday.)

ESPN Boston reports that Greg Stiemsma received an offer from a third team (not the Celtics or the Timberwolves), and that is unlikely that we can retain him.

There is no way that the Celtics can offer him more than the Bi-Annual Exception (about 2M $), since we are already above the cap before signing Jeff Green. The best we could offer would be the BAE with a player option for the 2nd year. If Stiemsma then opts out next summer, we will have Early Bird rights, and can offer him up to the average salary in the league (about 5M $) plus 4.5 percent. This would require a leap of faith from Stiemsma, but would also make it possible to make a sign-and-trade next season if things doesn't work out in Boston.

Good idea, but if the offer is exceptional from the other team he should take it.  Might be his only chance at a decent payday.
