The NBA is a business, they should make as much money as they can.  If you want the alternative go sit in the bleachers of your local rec league and watch free, unsponsored basketball.

Yes, the Celtics are a "business" but it's also a civic entity that we all can identify with.  It's a "business" that we grow up with and is something that draws people from different background together.  I recognize capitalism and America's success on that system.  This is the case of "just because you can doesn't mean you should".

The NBA can create more profit with this.  But should they on the expense of tarnishing the uniform?  I say no.  I say there is no price for the uniform itself.

I say no to a 2" x 2" square.  I say no to a 1/2" by 1/2" square.  I say no to a foot long advertisement.  I say no to ads on uniforms.

It's the market that decides how much guys will be paid. Nothing the league can do about it unless they cap salaries, in which case the union would go crazy.

I'm not a big fan of the advertisements either, but it doesn't shock me seeing who the commissioner is. When there is a choice between welfare of the game/tradition and money, money will always be his choice.

Back to wanting Joe fired.

The NBA uniform isn't what you think it is.  It's been tarnished for years.  I mean the Celtics alone have several different jerseys they wear every year.  I think that tarnished it right there.

Home white. Check.
Away green. Check.
St. Patty Day jersey. Check.
Away green with black stripe. Check.
Italian jersey. Check.
Throwback green. Check.
Home with gold trim. Check.

Then if we're lucky enough to make the finals, they'll do most of those jersey's again, but add a special "Finals" patch to it, giving the public an opportunity to buy another 3-4 jerseys!

I don't have a big issue as long as the ads are strong.

If they put the money towards the fan's experience (and maybe not raise ticket prices for a few years), it's all good.

Greedy ass Edited for profanity.  Please do not do it again.s. Sign players to less ludicrous contracts; that'll dwarf any revenue that kicks in from jersey ads. Imbecile owners.

I wonder who gets to decide which sponsors get the ad space?

Will Wyc make that call for the Celtics, or will it be Stern?

BTW, there are already tons of sponsors who get the moniker "official [insert product type] of the NBA." For instance, Sprint and Bacardi this past season. Does this mean that T-Mobile, AT&T, Smirnoff, and Jim Beam can't negotiate with individual teams to advertise on their jerseys?

I also agree with whomever said $3.3 million per team is a rounding error. Corporate sponsorship should generate more than $100 million for the league. Naming rights for arenas cost a lot more than $3-4 million, don't they? Does that money kick back to the league, or do the individual teams get to keep it?

....those are retail jerseys.

If you mean those are retail versions of jerseys they actually wore in games, then you would be correct. The Celtics thank you for watching their games by the way. It's not like I posted pics of the pink or the black or the grey jerseys they also sell.

So this untarnished jersey you speak of is really just a myth, since they've altered and changed it so many times already, just in the past few years.

And this is the Celtics a franchise I think is pretty good about not completely selling out.  You know how many different jerseys the Cavs wore when they had LeBron?  What do you think that was about.

St Patty's

Green and Black alternate

Home Finals Patch

Away Finals Patch

Italian

Home with gold trim

Throwback

Here's a couple of more "tarnished" jersey's with patches that they actually wore in games:

They wear all these different type of jerseys to sell to us.  So it's already tarnished.  (Well except for some of the patches, like Red and 9/11 and what not, those are a classy move).

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

You're taking this discussion into a totally different realm.  All the uniformsyou mentioned are still a product of the Boston Celtics.  The purpose is to create money for the team and they are a part of their identity, whether you like them or not.  It's akin to the players you have on your team.  You like the guys on the team or you don't.  Either way the ownership is responsible for the team.

But we're talking about a piece of the uniform, the team and city's identity, being sold to advertisers.  This is a breach by the outsiders and all for what?  To raise more money for both sides (advertisers get the fans hooked to their products and the team to get extra dough for themselves).

I would be p---ed if the Celtics move away from their traditional uniforms (the white and the green) on a full time basis but this is not what we're talking about.

It's obvious you don't care about it.  That's fine.  I'll keep trying to reach out to those who do.

One day though- when this advertising thing becomes rampant, your kids are going to demand a Celtics jersey without the wordmark and with the "DUNKIN CELTICS" in reference to Dunkin Donuts because that's the newest, hip jersey.  Just plain old Celtics? bah.

But the whole idea of a jersey itself and a team name is a marketing ploy.  It could simply be "Boston at Miami" but that isn't marketable.  So you call it the "Boston Celtics at Miami HEAT".  The leprechaun, the shamrock, all of it is just a marketing ploy meant to take your dollars away and put them into the pockets of the NBA.  The whole thing was marketing and cash from the beginning.  This doesn't change much.

The four local teams have different logos, different color schemes, different merchandise, etc...  If it weren't for attempting to make some money, we'd just be Boston and not "Boston Celtics", "Boston Red Sox", "Boston Bruins", or "New England Patriots".  Heck, the Patriots changed their logo within the last 20 years or so.

It is possible that it could be 'tastefully' done.

If the Celtics' jersey sponsor's logo is a combination of green and white it wouldn't look too bad. If however a company like Dunkin Donuts get their logo on there, the pink and orange against the white (or green) is going to look... :-\ Nothing against them of course.

I really am surprised it's taken this long for it to happen. Teams in equal and lesser leagues have been doing this since the 70's.

The NBA must really be hurting since the television contracts, ticket sales, merchandise, and National TV/Radio/Magazine Ads are only generating 4 billion dollars a year. Once again mega corporations will benefit and thank god because i'm pretty sure that the rich do not have all the money on the planet yet. This will help.

The NBA has the same amount of credabiltity that the XFL had to me.
