Adam Silver and David Stern held a meeting with the board of Governors and they agreed to have a 2" x 2" space on the uniform right above the heart where the NBA logo is now sold to advertisers.  Teams may elect to have ads or not but this is the wedge they're trying to create to get us fans used to the idea that ads on uniforms are a good thing.  This will garner $100 million revenue for the league.  Oh and in September they'll have a meeting to address the flopping.  Glad to see they have their priorities in order.

Want a Burger King logo on the Celtics uniform?  If not, PLEASE contact the league and let your voice be heard.  I just emailed them (nicely or else they'll just delete it) stating that the uniform is a sacred piece of NBA history, et cetera.

Tweet to @nba with the hashtag #nouniads
Send an e-mail to the league
Call the league office at 212-407-8000
SAY, “NO UNIFORM ADS!” And if the ads will make you less likely to buy a retail jersey, be sure to tell them that too.

The NBA, where creating even more profit even while the league is flourishing happens.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
They could trial it and see how it goes I guess.
Pretty much every other league in the world have this and it doesn't change the level of play- just brings more money into the game and therefore more coverage and attention.
Hopefully they start small as suggested, so the fans can get a feel for it and they can gauge public reaction.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

Yeah Europe does it so it's ok we do this too.

This is the NBA.  We have a beautiful history and the uniforms are lovely the way they are- pure and a reprensentative of the city it plays for.  The Celtics uniform is gorgeous the way it is.

It's not going to affect the level of play but it's going to affect the quality of the product.  You want more fans and TV coverage, I want my Celtics uniform unblemished.  I can understand the league doing this if they're strapped for money but they are NOT.  It's an extra $100 million for the rich and we're suckers for embracing this change.

The NBA will start more close up shots and logos will be very visible in photos and replays with different angles. In general game play will be harder to see them, but companies will flock to have their name in every still photo of Rondo or Lebron. Imagine the millions watching Durant vs Miami with Burger King on Durants chest at the free throw line and McDonalds on Lebrons... that's a lot of $$$.

Works well for soccer and NASCAR though.  Personally, I can't see any reason not to.

For those who buy jerseys, would a 2 inch Sprite patch really stop you from buying a jersey?

On a NBA DL jersey (why would anyone ever want to though), sure.  But on a Celtics uniform...pass.

That's probably because you're not used to it.  Soccer jerseys sell quite well.  Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably the world's top soccer player, sold over $100 million in jerseys, with a huge gambling website logo plastered all over it.

I think this is much ado about nothing and will just look like a normal part of the uniform within a few years.

Annoying but not a surprise, we'll get used to it.

Very disappointed with all of the reactions here.  Guess it's a win-win for the NBA.

$100m for the league is $3.3m for each team.  For a league with $2 billion plus, that's a rounding error.

The "two inch ad" is a way to open the door.  After a few years, ther'll be bigger ads and more revenue.

Id rather this than 100 ads on during the game and 100's or promotional ads.

Im sure it will just be a double dose but oh well. It sucks that they will change but at least we will get the beat of both worlds

I would definitely be in favor or a Guinness patch on the uni.  How cool would that be?
