Well, most of all that was hindering the Lakers' acquisition of Howard was his reluctance to re-sign in L.A. Now he wants to join Kobe and the gang.  :'( GG

Quote
Dwight Howard has long coveted the Brooklyn Nets as his next landing spot, but after a summer filled with daily rumors of four-team trade proposals, the six-time All-Star has moved on from his Big Apple infatuation and is locked in on joining the Los Angeles Lakers, according to sources.

The Lakers, Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly discussing a three-team trade that would send Howard to the Lakers, Andrew Bynum to the Cavaliers, while the Magic would receive Anderson Varejao and multiple draft picks.

Howard has always been impressed with the Lakers’ winning tradition and intrigued with the off-court opportunities that come with playing in Los Angeles.

Questions about Howard's role with the team, however, became an early concern for the three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Howard has since moved on from those concerns and is confident he will be an integral part of a team that will have a chance to compete immediately for a championship, according to sources.

The Lakers are reportedly ready to make the trade, but first need assurance from Howard that he will commit to the team long-term. Sources say Howard is “excited” about the opportunity to play for the Lakers and will re-sign with the team when his contract expires at the end of the 2012-13 season

GUYS...GUYS, let's not panic - Mike Brown is still their coach. The Lakers will find a way to mess it up! LOL

This really has left me with a pit in my stomach.

I'm seriously dreading the day when the Lakers pass us for most titles.  I guess I better start getting prepared for it though, because it appears to really be on the horizon.

The worst part is, I know I'm going to be stuck rooting for those heathens down in South Beach real soon.

I'm going to need some medication.  :(

"he really doesn't want to go to LA" huh?

lol

The truth is he didn't. Lakers for 2 years were trying to get him. But Dwight didn't want to go the Lakers for couple of reason. One is Kobe explicitly said he will always be the man in LA. Two, he was hesitant following Shaq's career path. But Howard that flip flopper changed his mind.

Kudas to you for sticking to your position. TP

Kobe is also 33 and will retire before Dwight does.  And the Shaq stuff is likely less of a big deal than the media makes it out to be.  It sounds like a fun story, but why would Dwight make life decisions based on what Shaq didn't do or what Shaq did do?

Isn't it more likely that the Lakers were his #2 option all along and he said he would only do Brooklyn to try to force his wat there?  Now that his #1 option seems less likely, he is choosing his #2.

Actions always speak louder than words.  Players, agents, and teams leak information (sometimes false) to serve their own agenda.

If you have a direct quote from Dwight Howard himself stating he never liked LA, that is one thing.  "Sources" and information leaked in the media is another.  Believe all of what you see and only some of what you hear.

But Why the Lakers? I know it a nice short term fix. But in 2 years Nash is 40, and Kobe is 35. What happens then? Dwight will be in the same predicament in 2014. I think this is case Dwight trying to appease people around him. Anyways I owe you an apologize. You had this right all along.

No need to apologize, I've been wrong a number of times myself and am usually stubborn while being wrong.  I greatly appreciate it, though.  True class.

Personally, I think the appeal is enormous.

From a money standpoint, this is the best NBA market for endorsements and extraneous activities.

From a fame standpoint, he is joining the second best NBA franchise in history with elite superstars surrounding him.  Few teams have players as famous now as Kobe, Nash, and Gasol and as famous historically as Magic, Kareem, Shaq, Wilt, etc...

From a current roster standpoint, he has an immediate shot at the championship.  Some may think they are too old and not deep enough and they may prove right.  But they are a contender.

From a future standpoint, it looks just as appealing to me.  Nash has only 2 years on his contract.  Pau will be leaving soon too.  Even Kobe has hinted towards retirement.  This would allow the Lakers to build a team solely around Dwight with cap space.  There would be no bigger draw in the NBA than the Lakers with Dwight and cap space.  Some free agents in 2015 include Tony Parker, Kevin Love, and LaMarcus Aldridge.  All guys that you could easily see jumping to LAL.  Just like CP3, Melo, LeBron, and Bosh all changed teams in recent years.  There will be new young stars who force their way to Hollywood with Dwight.

And the Lakers have a new $200 million a year television contract (their old TV contract was $35 million).  So a repeat luxury tax will barely make a dent in their war chest.

Compare this to Brooklyn.  Instead of joining a declining roster with championship experience and short term contracts, he would be joining a declining roster with no championship experience and longer contracts.  The Nets will have no flexibility with the Wallace and Johnson contracts.  The Lakers will have flexibility with the Nash and Gasol contracts. Big difference.

I thought it would be the Lakers all along because it makes the most sense and is the best option for Dwight out there.  In my opinion.

LAKERS coach likes Varejao, only way Bynum get's trades is to Cleveland, not Orlando. And they must give up Gasol.

ORLANDO trades Baby to Cleveland, and get's Thompson. JRich to Cleveland. All their contracts ends in 2 years, Turkoglu is guaranteed 6 million after next season, Nelson is partially guaranteed his 3rd year (buyout Clause). Thompson is on a rookie contract.

Get's 3 or 4 picks, not a bad deal, but nothing compared to Rockets deal.

CLEVELAND, becomes a playoff team automatically with Bynum and Irving.

The Lakers aren't giving up both Bynum and Gasol.

No, the reported deal doesn't have anything to do with Gasol.

"Dwight's position has remained unchanged since the end of this past season," said Dan Fegan of LaGardere Unlimited. "He fully intends to explore free agency at the end of next season, regardless of what team trades for him, including Brooklyn."

Which actually makes financial sense.

Quote
The longest Howard could sign an extension, according to ESPN Insider's Larry Coon, would be three years, in either an extend-and-trade or after joining his new team.

If he waits until his current deal expires, Howard would be eligible to sign a new five-year deal for as much as $108 million.

I hate to, but I have to give the Lakers credit here. They're in the best position to acquire D-Ho in a trade this summer because they were smart enough to draft Bynum with the 10th pick in 2005, and then to slowly develop him.

If Golden State took him at 9 instead of Ike Diogu, or the Knicks at 8 instead of Channing Frye, they'd be sitting in the catbird's seat right now.

If the Lakers didn't send those two first round picks to Phoenix for Nash, Howard would be a Laker already.

I honestly dont think this move would improve the lakers that much.

I thought last year(just like Rondo/CP3) Bynum really closed the gap with Howard....Howard may be better defensively, but hes pretty soft offensively honestly, he will NOT bang in the post like Bynum.

thats why last year, skinny ole KG was able to handle D.howard while Bynum killed us

Bynum and Howard are a toss up as to who is the better offensive player.  Howard would make the Lakers so much better than Bynum at the defensive end. The Lakers, if healthy, would be a 67 win team and very difficult playoff out with Howard.

Lakers still should be a tough out with just Bynum this year...its the addition of an actual Point-guard who can make smart decisions in Nash that makes them scary IMO..

Orlando gets:  Tristan Thompson, future first from Cleveland, 2nd from LA, McRoberts, Casspi
Cleveland gets:  Bynum, Steve Blake
Lakers get:  Howard, Glen Davis

McRoberts and Casspi are both expiring.  The inclusion of them and Blake allows Orlando to get rid of Big Baby's contract in this trade.

That's a pretty putrid return on Howard, I think.

I'm pretty sure if the Lakers are going to get Howard, they'll have to give up Bynum AND Gasol.

Lakers send GASOL to Orlando and Bynum to Cleveland . Howard to LA.  ..... and do all the parts inbetween.

No way should Gasol be left on LA .  He LA wants Howard then they should to bend over for Orlando and Cleveland to appease them.
