Can you point to when Lin, Melo and Amare worked together?

I can point to a time when Felton and Amare worked together.

Amare Stoudemire last year and this year were physically two completely different players.

And what's the sample size on Lin playing alonside Melo?

Not enough to pay him the amount it would cost to keep him.

Best part of the story.  Houston cuts Lin in December and then pays him 25 million dollars in July.  Classic.

How is that classic?  Every GM makes mistakes.  I think working to correct it instead of letting ego get in the way is a good thing, not a bad thing.
How does a guy go from not even being good enough to make your team to that same team paying him 25 million dollars over 3 years?  I understand there are marketing dollars at play and Lin might very well be worth the contract from that end, but this is still the same player that the Rockets cut just before the season.  You don't improve that much in 2 months.  Either they made a terrible mistake (like a few other teams did as well) or Lin was a fluke that can't be sustained.  I'd lean much more heavily to a fluke, which is why I find it funny that Houston signed him.

In the 2010 NBA Draft Lin had the 12th highest PAWS40. The kid's no fluke. him not being drafted then being cut has more to do with the ineptitude of nba general managers (generally speaking) than him.

That doesn't even approach making sense.

Really.

You have a guy that put up big numbers for a short period when there was no one else on the floor.

The same guy was less effective in the few games with other on the floor.

So lets pay him max money plus huge tax money in year three because there is so much proof out there that he will work with the rest of the team.

What is the expectation for an $8 million a year point guard?  This isn't a max contract or anything.
$8 million = Top 20 PG ... preferably in the 13th-17th best range

Or if he works out, you win.  And if he doesn't work out, you use the stretch provision and don't pay any tax on his contract in Year 3 at all.

And the key point is, they won those games.  Those games you are talking about with no one else on the floor.  Isn't winning games the ultimate goal?

The stupid thing about this is that the Knicks would be happy to pay Lin 8 mil a year and were fine matching the first contract.  You never make public statements about matching like that.  It just inspired the rockets to rethink the contract and make it even worse for the Knicks.

The Knicks could have locked Lin up before he got an offer too.  He'll be better on the rockets and might get lucky and be able to run the pick and roll with D12.   I have no doubts he will be worth his salary, this just shows me why if your a capped team you really don't want to open yourself to offer sheets, because they will be structured to make your payroll hurt!

Agreed. Their first mistake was telling Lin to go out and find out his market value while assuring him they'd match whatever offer was sent their way.

Then, when Houston did exactly what any other smart FO would do and give Lin a seriously onerous contract, they got p---ed and walked away.

Yet another reason why James Dolan remains a paragon of reason.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

The Knicks were screwed as a team when they traded for Camelo Anthony.  This is relatively minor.
People seem to forget that about the Knicks. They were quite dangerous when Amare was the star of the team. With Carmelo there it just doesn't work.
Signed to a 6 year $0 contract with the Celtics Blog forum!

They were a.500 team without Melo.

And a .500 team with him.

But they had a bevy of young talent. Now they have Carmelo Anthony.

I will say this, I think there's at least a shot Knicks fans are vindicated and that Lin proves to be a one hit wonder, or at least not nearly as good as he was for his midseason stretch last season.

I think there is more than a decent shot this will happen.  Lin walked into a Perfect Storm with NYK.  No Melo. A deadbeat coach.  No PG.  A need for scoring and playmaking.

Once Melo came back, you saw his impact deteriorate.  Lin needs to shoot in order to play his game.

I see him putting up his numbers on Houston, but Houston will suck.

I always enjoy it when NYC fails in a way they always think they are the center of the universe.
