I'm not saying he has to play like Chris Paul. He's got to keep the franchise relevant like Chris Paul did for the Hornets.
I'm going to ignore the second part of your point because I really don't want to perpetuate that point by any means.
BUT WHY. Does Goran Dragic have to keep the Suns relevant? Devin Harris? Mike Conley? Raymond Felton?
Take some time and scroll through the salaries of the league. Jeremy Lin is being paid the average amount for a starting point guard in the league. He doesn't have to be a basketball messiah for Houston. They're paying him to be an average point guard in this league. 2 million a year less than Mike Conley, 3 million more than Ramon Sessions. Average
Your expectations of what he needs to be is constructed by either media hype or some feeling that because he's Asian he NEEDS to be great, but they're not based on reality. Houston is paying him to be an average starting point guard in this league.
I think that the media hype definitely plays into how he is expected to perform in the league.
If you want to keep Jeremy Lin, the media phenomenon, out of the discussion and stay strictly with a performance-to-salary ratio, well, that's your prerogative.
I'd just add that, IMO, more people have paid to see Jeremy Lin (specifically) play basketball than Felton, Dragic, Sessions, or the other PG's who get paid similarly to him.
From a marketing standpoint, Lin's contract is a steal, but because he's in the public eye of the NBA, the expectation for his game is going to be elevated beyond his pay rate. That's my take on the situation.
And, as always, I might be wrong.
Not to mention, I love the fact that he's in the West now. One less bump in the journey to Banner 18.
