Best:
1) Miami - Sucks to say, but they added two 3-pt shooters (Allen and Rashard) and re-signed 3-pt shooter Miller. For a team that just won the title based entirely on an offense of James and Wade driving and either getting fouled (fair or foul) or kicking it out for open 3s, they just brought in two fantastic 3-pt shooters and re-signed their own. Oh yeah, and one of them was a HOF-er from the Celtics. They didn't really need height or anything else. Camby would have been an unnecessary bonus. Lack of height can only hurt them against one team...
2) Fakers - Sucks to say (again), but the Fakers added Nash (ugh, makes me sick to write that!) and somehow got bigger down low (Jameson, possibly J. O'Neal). Now, I'm not saying Jameson or O'Neal will contribute, but it doesn't hurt to have two near-7-footers backing up your front line of 7-footers (Pau and Bynum). Nash will contribute both on-ball and off-ball, as he can hit 3s and pull-ups as good as anyone his age. And, what angers me most is they gave up almost nothing to bring in these guys. Nash for draft picks??? And, the rumor is they're going strong after Howard, and all they'd need to give up is Bynum and more filler. What a crock!
3) Celtics - Retaining one's own was important, and they brought back KG, Bass, Wilcox, and Green. KG is probably the biggest signing of the off-season, especially at the hometown discount he took. Signing Terry will prove an upgrade over Allen if he stays healthy and meshes with Rondo and KG (those are our offensive and defensive captains). I like the draft we had, but they won't contribute this year. Losing Allen hurts for three reasons: He shot over 40% from 3 last season, he went to the Heat, and Ainge can't use his salary money elsewhere because of the CBA. The Celtics didn't get bigger down low, but they added depth and athleticism. A championship season rests on Jeff Green's shoulders/heart (I'll explain in my upcoming 2012-13 Celtics article).
*The Nets cannot be mentioned here because they just gave Brook Lopez $60 million and took on Joe Johnson's contract. Huge mistakes.
Worst:
1)/2) Houston/Phoenix - Do these two organizations have any idea what they're doing? They seem to be working in the dark. Lin for $25 million. Phoenix now has 15 PFs. Things may work out for them, but there seems to be little rhyme or reason so far.
3) Orlando - Like others I'll wait to see how things play out, but it's clear that Howard and Magic management have destroyed this team for years to come. Amateurish for a team that was in the 2009 Finals.
4) Bulls - They've done nothing to help for this coming season. Seems they're trying to restructure things around Rose for future seasons.
