From a business perspective, and the NBA is above all a business, this is a monstrous mistake.

Not really at all, I'd imagine.

Too soon to tell. Too many variables, like whether this now draws Howard to Houston or if Houston still wants expendable contracts.

Not official yet, but has been reported by Howard Beck of the New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/18/sports/basketball/knicks-lin-rockets-offer-sheet.html?_r=1&smid=tw-share

Very surprising to me.  If the Knicks just offered Lin 3/$24m from the jump,, they wouldn't have lost him. One would think that one of the two most valuable franchises in sports could manage to hire a competent GM.

I believe the Knicks would be limited to to 3 years and 16 million, though they could have gone 4/24.

I do agree if they'd been aggressive off the jump they could have retained him. There goes one of their few chances to add an impact guy to their three player core.

Frank Isola, Al Iannazzone, and Sam Amick all say that the Knicks have not notified Houston that they are not matching.

Love it ... hoping they can couple Jeremy Lin + Dwight Howard together.

If Chandler can finish at a 60% clip for an extra what 4 buckets a game off of Lin, Howard should be able to match that with no issues.

I wouldn't put it past them. Houston-NY and Minnesota-Portland have a lot of bad blood stemming from these offer sheets. At least it's just 72 hours now. Remember when teams had a week to match offers?
