I think Stiemsma would return for the BAE if there isn't too much difference between that and Minny's offer. Ainge needs to make a strong and quick push to make that happen though.
Hopefully this is true, but I have my doubts if Minnesota is planning on using the under the cap exception of 2.5 on him like I'm guessing they are.

Didn't Stiemer's agent already said he'd stay with Boston if the dollars were close?  Is the LLE only for two years?

I think Stiemer would match well with Sullinger in the second unit and I still have my fingers crossed somehow.

what's the max we could S&T GS for? 125% of $1.1mil?

I don't believe we can S&T Stiemer at all.  No Bird rights or some such.

right. thanks.

Didn't Minnesota sign Brandon Roy?

Do they really need Lee?

That's like a Twolves fan saying "Didn't Boston already sign Terry?  Do they really need Lee"?

Roy is probably going to top out around 20 to 25 minutes.  Lee would be a good fit for them, especially since they're reportedly going to flip Wayne Ellington for Dante Cunningham.
Plus Roy's knees are likely to lock up at any time, you cannot count on him to play in your rotation.

All good points.

He can stay here by merely not signing the offer sheet from Minny

I'll pass on giving Stiemer the bi-annual exception.

If Stiemer wants to stay with the Celtics, the only thing I would offer him is a one-year deal with non-Bird rights, and that'll make him an Early Bird candidate next year, where I think he'll get paid better than what's currently on the table (if we were still interested in keeping him by then, or can be used for sign and trade).

It's a risk for him, but might be worthwhile.

Who better are they going to spend it on?

Maybe a temporary starting 2 if they can't swing a S&T.

But is there even a backup 1 out there worth it?  Or another 5 that would be a better fit?

Don't know at this point. I only know that the BAE is the only real tool we got left in the chamber that can help us outbid some of the competition for future possibilities.

I'd rather risk losing Stiemsma and his limited role (a role I think we can fill in nicely with a vet. minimum contract) and keep the BAE option open for whatever may come. If nothing worthwhle is there, and Danny plays the financials right, we'd still have the exception next year with a fresh set of free-agents. Also, not using the BAE this year, might actually make it more plausible for us to have the full MLE next year, and I think that's also more valuable.

So I'd think very hard about using this exception on someone like Stiemsma who I estimate will have little, if not limited impact for us this season.

  • It's all about the TEAM!
I've felt this way ever since Perk's injury. I thought we were covered in 2010-11. That didn't work.

I felt the exact same way. At one point it felt like we had depth at center and it hasn't felt that way at all since we traded Perk and Shaq was injured. The sad part was when Shaq was healthy and we had some depth, we were downright scary as a team.

I don't want to risk too much on Steamer but the kid shows some potential. He didn't have a training camp with us last season and his wheels were hurting and he overachieved. No, he wasn't perfect. He had his weaknesses. He's got a lot to work on. But he gave us solid playing time for the most part. I think a REAL camp and being healthy and another year, he could be pretty good. I'd hate to let this prospect walk. I'm a little tired of being truly thin at Center. I don't want things to begin and end with Steamer but I want him on our team as one of our pieces.

How ever aggressive we can be without damaging our options too much, I'm all for it.

I think it's time to take a cue from the Ray Allen situation and show Steamer he's wanted. I don't think it would cost us but so much to get 1 more year out of this guy and if he doesn't show improvement, I'd feel better about letting him walk NEXT YEAR.

I agree, but that aggressiveness has to be the 2 years x $2M of the bi-annual exception.

If Stiemsma gets a good contract from Minny I'll be happy for him, he deserves good luck after grinding his way to NBA at 26.

But we'd rather sign Milicic for the vet min and keep the BAE for the waiver wire in march, when there'll probably be better options.

If you don't like Darko, Blatche or whichever low risk/high reward big is waived/left over. I think Melo will be ready for some action by february, just for Regular Season. In the playoffs we couldn't count on Stiemsma or Melo anyway.

We need a wing to cover for the Avery injury absence, and that's a priority over Center depth. Try to get Pietrus for the min, or maybe TMac/Childress. If you can avoid using the BAE until later in the season, great.

A S/T for Terry looks very unlikely, too bad we can get Lee, but we'll be ok.

If Birdman or Darko is available for the minimum, I'd prefer to use the BAE on Pietrus.  Need a defender with size and rebounding ability in that backcourt.

Bass/Wilcox/Sullinger
KG/Birdman/Melo

Add a beefy 4th stringer like Magloire and I'd be happy with that big man rotation.
