I mentioned this in another thread... its been reported by Larry coon that scola, like darko, has a partially non guaranteed player option his final year. According to coon, the amount bid on the player HAS to cover the amount owed to them when bidding on the player. So, teams under the cap who want to bid on scola would at a minimum have to pay, me makes 11 million his final year with a 1 million buyout leaving 10 million owed to him... meaning a team has toto offer up at least 10 million per season if bidding on him.  Or like mentioned teams can wait til he clears waivers and sign him as a free agent.

The darks example that coon gave was as so:
owed 5ish mil a season. His buyout on his last year is like 1.7 mil so a team under the cap has to offer at least 3.3 mil a season to bid on him. This is all because he has a non guaranteed final year with a buyout.

This has to be correct.  You don't question big Larry Coon.  I could see him becoming a free agent, but I can't imagine how he'd ever end up in Boston.  I'd be thrilled, but it's not going to happen.

That makes no sense at all, you're mis-interpreting what Coon is stating.

Why would a team bidding on a player that has been amnestied, have to bid a PER SEASON amount for an amount that is non-guaranteed to a player for ONE SEASON?  Under that scenario, Scola would get the remainder of the guaranteed money owed to him over the next two seasons (plus the 1mil buyout in the 3rd season) PLUS 10mil for 3 years (total of 30mil).  That would be more (way more) than he was ever scheduled to make orginally.

No way that is the intent or meaning of the rule.  Scola will get paid whatever Houston owes him in guaranteed money by Houston, and any team bidding on him must bid at least the amount owed to him in non-guaranteed money (10mil), spread over the 3 seasons reamaining on his contract.  If the winning bid is for more than 10mil, the amount in excess of 10mil comes off the amount Houston owes Scola.

You are right. What Coon says is that the bid (a one time payment) must cover the largest number of either the minimum salary or the non guaranteed part of the contract. And you only need cap space for what the bidding team will pay in the 1st year of the contract.

I hope not...

Right now we have 6 guys on our roster to potentially share playing time at the PF spot - 5 of those being between 6'8" and 6'10"

* Kevin Garnett
* Brandon Bass
* Jeff Green
* Chris Wilcox
* Jarred Sullinger
* JaJuan Johnson

The only guys on that list who are not undersized (in terms of either height or build) and who are above average rebounders are Wilcox and Garnett.

Signing Scola would give another 6'9" PF who is an average rebounder - 7.5 rebounds per 36 minutes adjusted last season, which is about on par with Bass.

That's 7/15 roster spots clogged up by taken up by potential  PFs.  Do you not think that's just a little overkill when we are so desperately in need of depth at other positions (Center and SG)?

Now to be fair Johnson is IMHO utterly useless, and if by some unlikely chance he's still on the roster opening day (I seriously doubt it) he won't see a second on the court.  KG is going to spend most (if not all) his minutes at center - likewise Wilcox.  Jeff Green will spend most his time at SF, but they will want to give him good minutes so he will surely get time at PF.  That leaves 48 minutes at the PF position that need to be divided between Bass, Scola, Green and Sullinger.  How are you gong to make that work?

What we really need is a legit backup center, so if you're NOT going to use the MLE on Lee/Mayo then at least use it on a servicable backup center like Brendan Haywood (clearing wavers) or similar - someone who can clog up space and give us a 'Kendrick Perkins' like presence.  Hell I'd even rather see Stiemsma get the MLE then use it on another redundant PF.

The only way I'd want to see us get Sola is if we planned to use him used as trade bait in a deal that would land us someone like Josh Smith - otherwise zero interest.

OK, I gotchya.  That definitely makes more sense.  I can't imagine some team not bidding on him then, and gives us even less chance of getting him.

Our signing Wilcox may have just ended our interest in Scola.

Just really don't want him to end up on Miami

Right now we have 6 guys on our roster to potentially share playing time at the PF spot - 5 of those being between 6'8" and 6'10"

* Kevin Garnettwill play mostly at center with our current roster
* Brandon Bass
* Jeff Greenis in no way a PF. He's more SG than PF.
* Chris Wilcox
* Jarred Sullinger
* JaJuan Johnsonis just bad

So that is 3 guys for PF minutes. Factor in Rivers under-using the rookie (obvious) and you have 2.5. I would think if we put a claim in for Scola we'd wait to sign Wilcox. Scola is a superior player to Wilcox and would easily compete with Bass for the starting PF slot. Also too many big guys has never been our problem if you know what I mean.

I am with you on needing a center though. I think Scola and Sullinger can both play some center with their post games and take some of the onus off of KG and maybe let him slide to PF. Scola is just an upgrade, over what I don't care but he's an upgrade and if we have to cut JJJ or reneg on Wilcox to fit him in I'm for it.

My prediction is that Mayo goes to Phoenix, Lee goes to Minny and we keep STEAMBOAT. I hope we get either Lee or Steamer though...or both!

There is zero chance that we can successfully put in a bid for Scola that will see him in Boston.  You have to have cap room for that, which we have negative dollars of.
