Taking a chance on a Howard trade made more sense when we had cap room to offer Deron Williams.  At this point, it would be exceptionally hard to part with a guy like Rondo when Dwight continues to say he will refuse an extension.  In fact, it's got to be hard for ANY team to give up major assets for a player who might bail after a year... which is why Brooklyn will probably end up landing him.  Brook Lopez and multiple 1st rounders isn't a "great" package...but it's a better package than any other team will probably offer unless they call Dwight's bluff.

ROndo would be one of the few reasons DH would come, so that kills that right off the bat.  ROndo is our young superstar guard ., that Howard needs to team with.  SO you figure out how to get DH here and keep Rondo and you might be on to something.

WOuld take alot of other players before Howard, including Kobe, Gasol, Love , Dirk ,Durrant .....ect ect ...

From this point in time on, Howard could end up being the biggest nothing the NBA ever saw for all the time , energy , ect wasted on him.

I'll keep Rondo thanks.

Rondo, Bradley, Dooling, JJJ is probably the most we could offer now, and that leaves a woefully imbalanced roster.

If he stays in Orlando until that Dec. 15th deadline for trading new free agents, I think we could put together a much more sensible offer.

Rondo, Sullinger, Melo and Green for Howard and Duhon.  An all-star PG locked up affordably long-term plus a young, talented 3/4/5 combo.  All for about $23 mil per for the next 4 years.

Boston would have Bradley, hopefully Lee, Pierce and KG to surround Howard with shooters, with high quality bench support in Terry and Bass.

Hmmm... still probably too old to convince him to resign.  So no dice.
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

It pains me to think of trading Rondo. (He's the Most Interesting Man in the NBA.) But...

With Howard + KG patrolling the inside, you could stop the Heat's driving offense and also match up size-wise with the Lakers (when Nash inevitably gets them to the Finals next year).

And with that much defensive presence inside, you could put Pierce at the 2 and start Green at the 3. You could then probably just play "fill in the blank" at the point guard spot.

Rondo + Bass + draft picks for Howard? Howard may be squirrely, but I'd bet there's a pretty good chance he'd stay in Boston. Not a lot of franchises higher profile than the Celtics right now.

  • It's what I do! It's who I am!
If I can get a written agreement from Howard to a max extension, I'd do it. And it wouldn't surprise me if Ainge did or is thinking about offering that without the agreement.

trading rondo for dwight is counter productive... we have no point guard to run our offense or even get dwight the ball ! then he walks in the summer
