While he wasn't anything extraordinary, he stepped up big for us in the playoffs and gave us minutes.  He displayed pretty good pick and roll defense, excellent hustle, and some alley oop throwdowns with Rondo in transition.   He obviously has amazing physical tools but just hasn't ever taken advantage of his upside.  Also as we all saw on the court and heard of off the court, KG absolutely loves the kid and trusts him.

So why haven't we signed this guy yet?  Vet min is all he can be hope to be getting, and under KGs tutelage for the next couple years, maybe he might actually develop into something.

Because Melo and Sully can probably give as much/more production than Hollins did.

Sullinger plays the 4.

Have you seen our depth at C?

Right now it is Melo and that's it.  Doc is not going to give Melo significant minutes.

Danny mentioned that Sullinger is going to play some center and I'd rather Melo play/and develop than Hollins.

Ryan Hollins is terrible at basketball. He runs around the court like a chicken with it's head cut off. I think Melo, in his rookie season, will be twice the player Hollins was for us.

That's true and Doc clearly prizes those two things very, very, very, very highly.  On the other hand, Hollins is truely, profoundly atrocious at other aspects of the game, particularly rebounding.

Sullinger will be playing C for us too.

If we can get no one else I'd take Hollins back.

We need another center but not Hollins. He has no offensive game and gets rebounds mainly by being tall.  He"s no physical enough to be a force in the paint.  Also he has terrible hands.  Any though of signing Hollins should be if all oterh options have been exhausted.

Props to KG for wanting to help almost any big man that DA brings in.

Doc liked him enough to play over Stiemsma. Mainly because of his pick & roll defense, and also his post defense which was stellar. The other areas of his game are nonexistent. I would bring him back sheer fact Rondo can get couple of cheap alley-oop assists. It also helps that KG likes him.

Stiemsma had the bad feet. Not sure he doesn't get more minutes if he didn't lose that mobility at times.

  • Ashy To Classy, baby.
Good guy, good end of the bench big. But we already have 1 or 2 end of the bench bigs. I think the noodle arms era in Boston is over.
My pic is now, and will be Fab Melo until he posts his first official NBA dbl-dbl. This may be permanent.

No one has said anything about him being great on offense, but I'm going to laugh when Melo doesn't play a single meaningful minute for us this season.  Melo is a rookie who doesn't know the rotations, is notoriously lazy, has no offensive game, and may or may not be able to play post defense on NBA bigs and plays mediocre pick and roll defense.  We all hope that he tops out at Perkins, but we all have seen first hand how much rookies do since Doc values continuity and knowing rotaitons which rookies struggle with.  Hollins is already a bonafide pick and roll player which is crucial against the Thunder and Heat and is a solid player on defense.

I don't think I've seen any evidence that Hollins is all that good defensively OUTSIDE of pick and roll situations.  Certainly not good enough to compensate for his putrid rebounding.  Hollins makes Brandon Bass look like Charles Barkley on the boards.
