Crazy.  I love Batum as a player, but that's a lot of money to toss at a non-star player (which I think he actually has the capability to be, depending on the team environment).

Guess this frees up money for Minnesota to offer Steamer more money than we're willing to pay him.

Yeah I hope this doesn't up their offer for Steimer.  Not surprising to me though I know they love Batum I was surprised this wasn't heard about sooner.

Sounds like Minnesota is holding off until the end of the day today to officially tender an offer sheet to Batum. Once they do, Blazers can only either match, or decline: there cannot be a sign and trade.

http://www.foxsportsnorth.com/07/12/12/Wolves-still-want-sign-and-trade-for-Bat/landing_timberwolves.html?blockID=759876&feedID=10354

The Batum situation bears monitoring: if Minnesota cannot work out a sign and trade and makes the offer, it's believed that the Blazers will match (possibly waiting the full 72 hours before doing so). Once that happens, Minnesota will be forced to look elsewhere for free agent signings. Courtney Lee and Greg Stiemsma have both been named as likely targets.

Pretty cool of these teams to give Batum almost a million dollars for every point he averages per game.

All aboard the Championship Express!

Yeah, looking like they'll have plenty of room to outbid the C's.

Hoping that Kahn tries to work out a trade involving another wing player instead. Iguodala?

What a great fit he would be for that team

I believe a member of the AP confirmed a little while ago that they could've had him for Martel Webster at the trade deadline a year ago.

I hate to point this out, but Jeff Green scored 9 points per game for Boston...

Did Philly make that offer? If so, and Minnesota turned it down, then Kahn is a bigger fool than I thought.

I hate Jeff Green's contract for sure, but when you're in a place where you're a legitimate championship contender overpaying for a role player is much more justifiable.

This contract is what's wrong with GM's. Nic Batum will never be worth this contract. He's not putting butts in the seat, and he's not improving our team enough where it financially matters all that much.

I was about to point out the exact same thing.

If green doesn't avg at least 12 and 5 next year the joke will be on us for that contract.

A very un Ainge like contract, I can't imagine who else was offering Green a contract like that

Yeah, I don't know how good Batum will end up being, but I'm actually okay with Green's contract.  Just pointing out where your rule of thumb might--or might not--fit.
